I asked Mini about the knock sensor and octan rating of 91 and got a mixed answer.
The fuel system and timing would adjust to the use of higher octan gas.
But not a definitive answer to will the timing be incresed? That would give better low end response and higher MPG.
Running Sunoco 94 in other cars with active knock sensors, BMW, VW, newer Miatas with Bosh type motronics has worked before why not on the Mini?
What type or make fule, ignition system is in Mini, Mini S?

I noticed a difference in power when using the Sunoco 94 VS Texaco's 93, I wasn't sure the first time, so I alternated between fill ups, this was measured by butt-o-meter only, but the difference was defnitely there. I'm sticking to the 94, even at the slightly higer rate of $1.77 per gallon, the 93 is $1.65, of course nothing is too good for my MINI.

In Canada except for Sunoco 94 all other gas companies only have 91 or 92 octane.

The MCS was designed to run 98 RON which is a number which is hard to find out in NA. I switched to 94 soon after getting my MINI and have been very happy.

the main value is on preventing pre-ignition and I am assuming that the engine management system takes advantage of this. the article in M-Z indicates that it will run on 91 to 98 RON but is optimized for 98 so the closer the better as far as i am concerned.

 

I just can't wait to get out of Colorado where my S will enjoy the benefits of low altitude air as well as octane ratings greater than 91.

I don't think you can go by just brand name either. I have a friend that races karts and has found a BIG difference in fuel formulation from city to city also. I'm not a petrochemical enginneer, but I think it has to do with emissions control by region of the country. Maybe someone can confirm this. I think you should just shop around for other premium gas regardless of brandname OR octane rating and see what works best. You might be very surprised.

I agree. Another reason is that the gas in a given area will generally come from the same distribution center for all of the different gas stations. In other words, BP, Amoco, Exxon, etc. get their respective tanker trucks filled at the same place.

Therefore, brand obviously won't make a difference.
