Mini Cooper Over revving Isue - 2006 MCS Auto Convertible

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I did a bunch of research on this and can't seem to find definitive answer to the issue I'm running into.

I just purchased a 06 Cooper S Convertible R53 with the automatic. Its a great car so far. The only thing that I see as a problem is that sometimes the car will not shift until 4000+ RPMs. When it eventually does switch, it does it smoothly. I don't have this delay when I'm in the steptronic mode. It shift perfectly and when I want it to in the manual mode. I read about the Adaptation Reset and I performed that. I'm still experiencing the issue.

Would an oil change or a speed sensor replacement fix the issue? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for your help!

I have a 2005 R52 S suto and my car does the same thing depending on the load on the engine at the time. Like going up a hill it will stay in a lower gear and shift at a higher rpm. Seems normal to me. I truly believe the car has a mind of it's own.

I read articles stating that it usually shift really well, so I'm not sure if this is something that just happens over time and that there is nothing to fix it. My goal is to make sure I don't blow up the engine and tranny as that would be a huge expense. What are the experiences of others?

Thanks again.

How many miles on the trans and has the fluid and filter ever been changed? Is it doing this in D, or in S without you manually shifting? Just asking because the trans doesn't shift automatically in the S/Steptronic mode until around 4K, or more, depending on how hard you are on the throttle.

If it's happening while in D, have you tried manually shifting when it does this? You can manually shift while in D when you want to and it will automatically revert to full auto after a bit. Once you manually shift in S it stays in manual unless slowing down or hitting the redline. This is temporary just to prevent damage to the motor and for convenience when coming to a stop. Once you manually shift in S, it will not go back to full auto unless you toggle the shifter to D, then back to S.

The car has 86,000 miles on it. I just purchased it, but if I was to guess there has been no Tranny Filter or Fluid change.

It Happens in D and DS. When I shift it manually with either the paddles or the shifter, it works just fine. Just the automatic is not working as expected.

At 86.000 miles, I would definitely have the fluid changed. The dealer may tell you that the fluid is 'lifetime' i.e. 100,000 miles...but that is bunk. Find an independent transmission shop that is familiar with mini auto transmissions.
