How can I tell?

I'm a new owner to a 2008 Clubman S. Manual trans. It has 52k miles on it. Is super clean and a blast to drive. Is there any way to tell if the 'time bomb' issues have already been addressed? I don't know if the previous owner experienced any of the major issues that I see on this site.

Timing Chain
HPFP
Thermostat

These three seem to be the biggies I've seen on this site so far. It's been driving great and I want to keep it tip top till Im 90!!

The miniusa site shows the first couple of oil changes for my mini, but that's it.
Thanks!

I think some pointers will be by removing the valve cover and seeing the shape, color, and condition of the rails. you can also look at the tensioner bolt and see if has the notch in the middle or not.

to be on the safe side, keep an eye on the oil level.

A timing chain is going to give you warning before big problems arise. Usually you'll start to get chain rattle that starts off light and progressively gets worse over time.

The HPFP may or may not be covered by the dealer if it fails, but there are stipulations, and if it's been replaced under warranty once there is a change they'll tell you you're SOL.

Thermostat isn't that big of a ticket, but you'll still put one in at some point of your ownership, they're just inherently flawed. We've got customers who have done 3-4 thermostats since buying the car new.

As with any new to you car, you'll have a few years of feeling the car out and finding the faults. Check the oil weekly, make sure the coolant stays topped up, stick to a 5k mile oil change, let the engine warm up a bit before flogging it, let the engine cool a bit before shut down, try to see a qualified tech at least quarterly for either your 5k oil change or a routine inspection to catch small problems before they grow.

+1 keep an eye on your oil level. The guides wear from lack of lubrication and running low on engine oil. This can cause timing chain rattle at start up, noise when running and worse-case scenario a jumped timing engine.

Information on timing components here (R56, but still relevant information): http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...eplacement.htm.

You can call your local dealer and give them your vin number and they can tell you if the HPFP has ever been replaced. They can also let you know if you qualify if an issue arises.

The thermostat will be an issue eventually so just keep an eye out for leaks. You'll also want to make sure to keep up on routine maintenance things and fix things when they arise. Don't let them pile up.
