Hi I am sure someone will say there are many posts on this but I have not had that luck of finding what I am looking for. My car (2002 R53) has 133,000 miles on it and do not want the supercharger to be run dry with no oil. Every post I have read says that I need to completely remove the supercharger but recently I have found that I can get to the plugs but need to remove the oil checking tube and then the water pump for the other side. I want to know if anyone else has tried this or similar if it will work because it is winter and do not have a second car at the moment and really do not want to take the supercharger off.
With the amount of work involved in the previous link, i'd rather pull the charger to do the service. That'll give you a chance to inspect your cooling hoses, clean the throttle body, inspect for leaks from the crank sensor, and clean up any built up grime around your engine. If the temps outside prevent you from working on the car, wait till weather permits. Even if its possible to add oil with the charger bolted in, I couldn't imagine it being easier or less time consuming than the typical way.
His housing situation and tools he owns might have a say in how he does this. I agree with you though.
But some apartment complexes ban you from doing any "major" work on a car in your spot. Which I'm sure they'd see taking the front off as major. He might could get away with just popping the hood. Or maybe he doesn't have all the tools required to take it apart that far, in which case I really do recommend getting the correct tools, I'm sure they will be useful later.
I do have a lot of tools (well my father does) but I just want to be sure it is running fine because it does sound somewhat funny between 2-3k rpm when excelerating but maybe its suppose to be like this. in the next 2k miles im taking it to the mini dealer and having them possibly do this next oil change and drive the car just to see if there is anything major about to go bad... If I can maybe I will work on and do some research on removing the supercharger and cleaning everything up
If you take it to the dealer and even remotely suggest some concern about your supercharger I guarantee you they will try to sell you a s/c oil service, if not more.

Dealer wont offer to service the supercharger. Only remedy they offer is to replace the whole unit.

At 133,000...you are better off to just leave it alone and keep driving it....unless you are having some issues/weird sounds going on with it. They are not designed to be serviced.....most only last 150,000-200,000 miles anyway....they are a wear item. If it's leaking oil, and/or been run dry...the damage is already done...putting oil back in it won't correct it. If it's not leaking, then it's probably fine...leave it alone.
Run it until you have a problem, buy a rebuilt or new supercharger, bolt it on...and keep on motoring
If it's not leaking, taking it off is likely to cause a leak. There was a guy on YouTube, don't have the link, that added fluid with the SC on the car using a small hose and medical syringe. I'm debating going that route until warmer temps arrive.
Thanks for all the input and was quite warmer today and I did some other simple work but thought that instead of trying to explain the sounds make a video.
Now the video the features inside is showing a bit how it sounds in the cabin and I walk out in front of the grill and can clearly hear a noise that I dont know what word to describe but maybe something lick clacking not clicking really, in the other clip I put my phone right over the supercharger and the spark plugs. Is this noise I am hearing the injectors or the spark plugs or worse supercharger I can find videos like the sound so is it normal or not. Finally in the last part I put the phone under the car because it is a different rattle and sounds like exhaust
I know this is supercharger service thread but I am hoping that is not where this is coming from
you will probably need to turn the volume up a bit
I have an 02 cooper s and there is a strange sound and it may be normal but since this is my first mini and first supercharged car I wanted to see how to fix it if there is a problem.
The car runs and drives just find except when i give it around 1/3 to 1/2 throttle it sounds like it needs to clear its throat but at full throttle it sounds find and I just here the whine of the supercharger. This may be different then what is in the videos below but this is what I hear at a stand still and trying to identify what it is because I could not find a video like this
I too have that noise, just less pronounced? I'm thinking timing chain tensioner? I would like a definitive answer too before I start throwing more parts at the car.
I got a really long, thick screwdriver and put it to the SC horns and the noise wasn't coming from there. Try that with yours, the noise travels through the shaft much like a stethoscope!
OK Andrew you just helped me with the fainter ticking in the first two videos (last video that sometimes happens but may just be from the cold because its not been warmer then 20degrees F for the last 4 months
But I used you method and found the ticking sound (yet to explain the problem when giving it throttle but) and it is the piece that is going into the engine block I have the pics and a video of where it is so now I need to figure out that because I have no IDEA AT ALL. hope you all can see what I am pointing to
Yup I am the most retarded person in the world that means that's been sitting in there since before I bought it!!
so I'll see if this takes the rattle and all the injectors make the tapping sound is this a sign of needing replacing or when should they be replaced
finally I still get the strange sound when giving it 1/3-2/3 throttle but at full throttle it "clears its throat" you could say
ill try recording the sound but probably can't hear it through video
so that sucker was in there tight and I drove to work and back and still all the same. Seems like the exhaust manifold is bad and the injectors are really clicking away and whatever is going on when i accelerate at half throttle. I think im bringing it in to a shop in town to have them take a look at it and hopefully they have heard of a mini cooper before...
So at the shop they cleaned up everything and it is coming from the manifold which must be cracked or broken somewhere which would explain the rattling bead like sound I heard the other day in the morning so does anyone have any good suggestions for a replacement for $500 or cheaper would be nice....not looking for anything fancy just to fix it.
Thanks
and I also need the 2002 exhaust brackets because I have a cheap setup to hold the mufflers up but want to get OEM or similar but can find ones with the one hanger pin turned like they need to be for 2002 r53
