R52 fault code p2096 w/ new-ish muffler..
Hi all
I've got an unmodified completely stock 2005 convertible (so R52). No supercharger in it. Totally stock.
Just got a P2096 on startup. 98k miles.
Figuring out where to look first/what to do first... Lots of threads on this, everything I find talks about how the problem is on their modded S, I figure that doesn't apply.
I'd normally just go straight for the sensor(s) given the car's age, but I had the muffler replaced about 2k miles ago after someone rear-ended me... Geico-shop replacement, used stock parts from the local dealer, pretty sure they did the entire muffler assy, including catback, so plenty of unknowns there.
Where's the most likely sensor for a P2096? Is it in or near the assembly that would have been replaced with the new muffler? or too far from it (either physically or in miles) to suspect the repair job?
Could a poor install job 2k miles ago be related?
Thoughts?
Thanks!

I just got this code. I didn't want to chase the issue so I took it in for inspection. Sensors were fine. They did a smoke test and said there was a giant leak at the green jam gasket that connects an intake duct to the supercharger. I just finished replacing it myself and will be testing it out Monday. I also replaced the crank position sensor gasket and did a coolant flush. I have an 06 with 34K miles.
Key is you had the "cat-back" replaced....the car can be run without any of it, no codes...
Any o2 that enters BEFORE THE CAT can cause the issue if it is an exhaust related code...so a bad exaust header, gasket, clamp, etc...

Code P2096 indicates that the rear O2 sensor registers a long-term lean condition. There is a technical service bulletin, No. M12 01 06, that addresses this problem. Small leaks at exhaust system welds and flange gaskets as well as at bungs for O2 sensors are relatively common, and can be found by pressurizing the exhaust system and using a soapy water solution to look for leaks, indicated by bubbles.
