Drive Belt (serpentine) Replacement

The drive belt is a better name for it because it's not very 'serpentine' on a Mini, just an oval loop, very short. You can hardly see it and I can't find a word about it in the owner manual. It should be one the maintenance schedule.

Mine lasted 73,520 miles and may have gone a few more, but I replaced it once I realized how worn it was. This was at a Mini specialty shop and the knowledgable mechanic suggested no more than 30,000 mi. on any Mini drive belt.

If it goes out, your are stranded and could damage the engine if you keep driving. It costs around $200 to do this.

Anyone out there not looked into this lately?

Mine was replaced at 23K for squealing at start up. The sound would eventually go away but soon it never went away. It was good to go after replacement.

I replaced mine when I did the water pump at about 80k. There was some cracking on the rib side, but nothing that scared me.

Have fun,
Mike

Yea, when they get cracked on the inside or start to squeal / chip just replace them if earlier.

Recommend to replace every 30,000 miles as weather and heat can cause them to age faster or slower. Its good maintenance.

The belt should be checked periodically (every 3,000 miles, or when you change your oil). Read more about the belt here and how to DIY replacement.
