Gen 1 A/C parts surprise

Gen 1 A/C parts surprise

The a/c in my 2004 MCS failed several years ago; dealer told me the compressor was bad; clutch is fine and there is no leak, its just that the compressor no longer 'compresses.' So I bought a used one from a reputable source and intend to install it myself. I thought I should also install a new receiver/dryer, so I inquired of that same dealer the cost of the part. Big surprise! They claim that the only way the receiver/dryer is available from MINI is part of a package that includes the expansion valve and the condensor, for a package parts price of $561!! Anyone else heard of this? What say our vendor friends - Way, ECS, Pelican?

Of course its not the case. I had to replace the condenser on mine last year, and I went with a Spectra brand which included a new drier.

There are many options out there. Take a look at rockauto's catalog:

I recommend having the system properly evacuated before doing the replacement, and then going back to put the system under a vacuum for at least 30 minutes before recharging.

An independent shop near me charged $70 for the evac and recharge last year.

If you haven't opened the system yet I would first put an ohm meter on the a/c relay socket and test the clutch coil. The compressors for the most part are bulletproof The clutch coil is the weak link

I run the system and I look at the compressor and clutch. I can see the COMPRESSOR turn, NOT JUST THE CLUTCH!

The dryer is separate, but the condenser comes with a dryer.

A/C Receiver Driers

There is an OEM option, aftermarket, or OEM supplier option. It is possible to get it without buying it in a package. Hope this helps!

Be careful buying a cheap condenser/drier - some use a generic drier cartridge you won't be able to find next time it has to be opened.
