New Timing Chain Tensioner

Is it supposed to be "compressed?" The one I removed is extended and kind of rough feeling when I compress it.

The new one will be compressed when new out of the box. It expands by the oil pressure. I changed mine out about a month ago. My old one was crunchy when compressed as well.

Not at all. Use a Universal socket or wobble extension.
