Strong vibration/harmonic humming from driver side wheel?

On Saturday I traveled to a city with the worst roads in Southern California (Fullerton) and noticed immediately after getting on the freeway a strong vibration on my front left wheel and after a few miles I also heard a harmonic humming noise that lasted for about 2 minutes, I thought the wheel was going to come off! I exited the freeway and park it for 30 minutes to jack it up and remove the wheel for my inspection. Everything seemed fine, I applied some serious force on all drive-line parts and things looked nice a tight.

Even stranger after my little inspection I got back on the freeway and the vibration and humming noise were not present for the remainder of my trip home which was about 10 miles, and yes I had my wheels checked to see if they were out of balance. All four wheels were given a clean bill of health as far as proper balancing.

Could that harmonic humming noise been my wheel bearings grinding or CVD's going out?

Any help would be appreciated!

Regards,
Systemlord.

Buckled rim? When I was still driving my Audi A2, its got 17'' on 205/40R17 and the front ones were buckled. It was vibrating like hell on the steering wheel.

Maybe you had a some rocks or so ething stuck in the tread....put it out of balance or had slight loose lugbolts and all the wiggling and checking recentered it for ya!! A rock stuck by a brakecpad or by the brake's splash gaurd might have been an issue... Sounds like you "fixed" it just by wiggling stuff...
Hopefully it never returns...feeling like buying a mega-bucks lottery ticket?!

I had it looked at today at JE MotorSports (Jawed) and Jawed took it for a drive to try and get it to vibrate and was unable to reproduce the vibration. Then he jacked it up and took a crowbar to see if anything was loose, he and I were stumped. I'm going to guess maybe it's the half-shaft ball bearings, let everyone know if it acts up going to and from work tonight because it's all freeway.

I could have swear I heard the sound of grinding ball bearings that was the harmonic humming sound.
