quick ? about tpms...and changing tires

i just put my winter tires on, i have only one set of rims,at discount tire, and they charge 32 dollars for a tpms "repair kit"...the guy explains that evey time you change tires, you need to repair the tpms....any of you guys (or gals) know if this is really necessary? thx, dan

Yes it's just new seals. It should be done.

It's a preventative maintenance thing. Can you get away without doing it? Usually.

a buddy had no issue reusing his old ones. he can always fix it later if it leaks air...

I don't see how changing seasonal tires twice a year requires a sensor service every time you change tires. Maybe every time you wear out a set of high mileage tires, but surely not twice a year.

Some installers have a corporate policy of always charging to service sensors. I think Firestone is one that does.

If you want to price a second set of rims Tirerack.com is a good place to look.

I believe Costco does too. I always have them switch mine out and it's roughly the same price.
