Transmission Solenoid Failed?

My girlfriend brought her 2005 Mini in for a check engine light. I forget the actual code but two places thought it was an O2 sensor. After replacing the O2 sensors the code did not clear. So then we went 100 miles to the nearest Mini dealer. Her car does have trouble shuttering and sometimes stalling from start.

The mini dealer quote says this is the cause of the check engine light:
"Upon inspection the tech found that the transmission solenoid has failed and had pushed transmission fluid through the wiring harness of the vehicle."

The quote to fix this is for $9000 in parts plus 35hrs of labor! All total about $14000. This seems ridiculous to me. The car is worth less then half of that. I think they are quoting a new transmission plus other things. The dealer was suggesting that she get a new car.

Can this solenoid and harness be replaced without replacing the transmission?
