Blower Motor Blues

*moved from R50/R53 Hatch Talk*

So a while back I had the blower motor stop working for about a week, then it started working fine again and everything was awesome. Took it to a shop, they played with all the controls, couldn't get it to fail to get a diagnosis. It was working perfectly until just the other day, when it went out again. But the thing is, it only went out for about 10 minutes, then came back on and has been working fine since. My question is, what can make it act up like this? I really don't think it's the motor itself going out, because it does work and works on all speed settings without a problem. Is there an electrical gremlin in there confusing it to not turn on? Or can it be just a simple bad ground or loose connection? I don't feel like taking apart my entire dash to trace wires and figure stuff out while it's in the 20s till pretty much March, so if anyone can help that would be awesome Next time it goes out, I'm probably just going to kick it while driving and see what happens, haha. While pissed off, I punched the area where the sunroof button is because it was rattling worse than normal, and it kinda fixed that...kinda -_-

Don't worry, I'm not abusive to my Mini at all, and I was actually very pissed when I found some scratches in the clear from my ice scraper...stupid mistake. I also hate when people slam the doors or rip the handle to open it...ahh!

There's a big thank you to whoever can help and a virtual handshake to go along with it, because it sucks wondering if the heat will turn on every time I get in it.

Seems more like the resustor of the blower is failing. Or.......the connector to the aircopanel is not properly seated or something.

The first is the most dificult of the two

Mine is doing the same thing. And it IS the motor. When it is not operating I can reach up thru the tunnel where the cabin filter would go, touch the squirrel cage and off it goes! It can go months without acting up then fail several times a week. And when it does run, it is noisy - not squeaky noisy, but like there are leaves in the blower housing, though there aren't. I think the motor has a bad armature - has a dead spot on it that, when I rotate the squirrel cage I bypass the bad spot. Bad thing is, to get to it to replace requires removing the dash. According to Bentley: Discharge the A/C, disconnect the batt, disconnect the steering column from the rack, remove the A pillar covers, remove the radio, remove the dash. Pretty major surgery. I talked with my local MINI mech and we both estimated about $1k, including motor $. I haven't jumped in yet but sooner or later I'm going to get mad enough...
