Coolant Temperature Sensor

Well, bought a mini (2011 cooper s) and so far its been great, until recently I threw a P0128 code and my high temp fan started running whenever it felt like it (even after short drives). After a little guess and check I've narrowed it down to the coolant temperature sensor. Order the part, was ready to go, pulled the car apart and took a peak at all the diagrams I could find and went to work.

So heres my problem. The car had the coolant temp sensor service done in march; when I had everything pulled apart I couldnt find the damn sensor! From all the diagrams I have seen, I was assuming that the sensor was on top of the thermostat but no such luck. Maybe im totally blind and its somewhere else but I couldnt find it for the life of me. If anyone can tell me where the sucker is (or better yet take a picture or two) that would be awesome! This is on the N18 engine, and may have had some sort of retrofit done?

Thanks!

It's in the radiator hose. There was a service bulletin out on this to move it from one hose to the other. Our 2011 R55 was a late build and had it in the thermostat-------and it still went out at 16K miles!

No, sorry I don't. The dealer did the service bulletin on a 2012 R-55 that I had for a short time last year. I remember they had to get a new hose to change it from one hose to the other. Best guess would be to trace the hoses back from the thermostat to the radiator.

No problem, I appreciate the help. If anyone else has an idea where the sucker is, it'd be appreciated

Just got back from the dealer with mine. The faulty sensor was replaced under a recall.

Good to hear. Mind if I ask what Year/Model/Mileage you have and what your symptoms were?
