Metallic Grinding Noise on Accel/Deceleration
Metallic Grinding Noise on Accel/Deceleration
Ok so lately for the past month i've noticed a very ominous sound coming from my car when I accelerate from 0-20 mph and decelerate from 25-0 mph. It sounds like a metal plate being dragged on asphalt and it's quite noticeable. Like even if you accel, take foot off gas, accel again the sound is there every time. My car is going in for routine maintenance soon so Im wondering if anyone knows what is causing the sound/what the problem is so I can let the mechanics at the dealership know what to fix. Any info is appreciated!
If it does it every time.... It will be easy to duplicate...
Just tell the shop whst it does...offer to take them on a ride to SHOW THEM...
If somebody suggests a fix online...and you say fix this...and the issue remains...you are screwed...ALWAYS let the shop diagonose and fix the issue....
Just tell and demonstrate the issue/fault....maybe say " I was told it COULD be..."...

Ok, let me rephrase, does anyone have any idea as to what could possibly be making the sound? I put the car in park and just revved the engine a little to see if i could replicate the sounds and I did every time i pressed the gas. So I don't think it's the transmission. A funny idea popped in my head the other night, was thinking what if its that little turbine inside the turbo possibly grinding against the inner wall of the turbo? I mean maybe that's what is causing the noise?
Actually, it sounds to me as though it is transmission related. The turbocharger would make more of a police siren noise than a grinding/rumbling.
Is this an automatic or manual transmission car?

It's an automatic. I'm a bit confused though because if it is transmission related then why would it make that sound if the car was in park and the engine was just being revved a little?
I was thinking it could be the input shaft bearing to the transmission. Usually rumbling noises at idle like that are transmission related.
Bit hard to diagnose without actually hearing though.

Easy to check, bang on the heat shields on the exhaust. Could very well be a loose one. careful don't burn your hand.

The sound isn't there when idling, only when accelerating. Typically (in non sport mode) between 7.5 mph -14 mph. Although lately the sound has been starting earlier and earlier in the rev ranges and has gotten louder and longer in duration. I'm getting quite worried. It's not a grumbling sound, more of a dragging a steel plate across the floor kind of sound.
Could it be pinging/detonation? I remember that sounding like a "spitting rattle" sound.
Can you take your mechanic on a drive to show him/her the sound?
Silly thought--how are the wheel lugs? Are they tight? I had a pretty bad moment with a noise I couldn't track down until I figured out that I had forgotten to tighten the lugs on a wheel after messing with it....

Well I don't think it has anything to do with suspension or brakes, I mean even though i've basically worn down my front run flats down to the little rectangular indicators I don't think that would affect any kind of suspension system and cause the grinding noise but who knows. I'm hoping it's not the transmission because with only 17.8k miles it shouldn't be having transmission problems. I'm going to be bringing my Clubman in for routine maintenance and will mention it to them, hoping it won't be major. But darn I would really like to know or at least have an educated guess as to what the hell is causing the sound so I can help the mechanics figure it out.
