Stock radio turns on, but no sound...Is there a MUTE?!

Hey, a few months ago I took a trip and my passenger had his ipod plugged into the aux cable outlet. We arrive and the next day I start my mini, the radio turned on and changed stations, but there was no audio.
Adjusted volume, changed settings, nothing.
Last week, I turned the radio on while the mini was off and for a few seconds, I would get low audio then it would go silent. I randomly pressed the radio buttons on the steering wheel thinking maybe I somehow had it on mute.
Any suggestions?!

If you have the HK system.... The amp is blown.....
Or perhaps the radio died....
10+ years of use, temp change, vibration....

I was going to say select between the audio mode, but what it sounds like (no pun ) is the amp is on its way out (if you have the Harman Kardon system ). You will know if you have the H/K system if the front door lower speaker grille cover states Harman / Kardon at the top on the ring. Turn the radio on and off (**** button pressed in) a couple times and see if the audio comes back. It might not be receiving a full signal from the amp. If it still fails, the amp is likely to have failed. Dependent on you model the HK amp will be in the trunk side panel ( hardtops ) or under the passenger seat (convertibles ).

Thanks

thanks guys. Yes I do have an HK system; I didn't even think about the amp. That probably is the reason since the radio and stations still work. I'll check the amp later on and look into a replacement. Thanks again

Unfortunately, the HK amps are $$$....
And not very compatible with aftermarket replacements....
They use speaker level inputs, and different wiring than a stock radio...so changing to a stock/aftermarket radio can be a Royal pain....

Agree with what zippy stated. It does takes some work to wire in an aftermarket solution for the amp. If you can't find one used to swap out to test or another one we have new ones here:

You did not state if you have a convertible or hardtop, here is both. And the part numbers.

Hardtop: 65129146708

OR.

Convertible: 65129146709

Thanks and good luck.

If the radio is muted it will display MUTE or PHONE. When the amp blows it's allegedly just one of the components on the board that is blown. If you are able to do surface mount soldering you may be able to replace the damaged component yourself.
