I would start in this order
Combustion leak test (pumps vapors at your coolant tank , liquid will change color if there are exhaust fumes in coolant) There doesn't have to be visible milkshake for a blown head gasket. Or loss or coolant pressure on a coolant test.
Check spark plugs
Compression test
Leak down test!!!

White & Dark Grey Dense Smoke
Hi. I have a 2004 mini cooper S and just had the spark plugs changed and cover. Now this occurs. I am loosing oil and loss of power when the smoke is coming out with puttering. Biut after running it all goes away. Whats wrong please...already spen so much money.

Smoke and losing oil
my 2011 Clubman is doing the same thing as your wife’s car. I received a letter that MINI have extended the turbo warranty to 120.000 miles.
I called the dealer and They will cover the turbo but if it’s not the turbo then its a $170 diagnostic charge! I need to realllly be 98% sure that it’s the turbo!
I have the exact same symptoms with no loss in power. Help!
