FYI:

I found an interesting little piece about breaking in piston engines over at an aviation web site: Teledyne Mattituck. They are a *very* well-regarded aviation engine company, and the gentleman who wrote this piece has tons of very technical experience. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this.

To read the article:

1.) browse on over to http://www.mattituck.com/

2.) click on the "Tech Advice" button on the left of the screen

3.) click on the "Engine Break-In" link toward the bottom of the page

He didn't really say anything new. You have to juice it to get off the ground but, then run as cool as practical. I'm sure the 4000rpm limit is set a little low. I'm willing to bet that BMW has done big dollar research on how to break in the engine that is least likely to cause failure. The big thing is no avoid glazing the pistons, so keep it cool. I'm sure 4000rpm in 4th is probably better than 4000rpm in first. (more air for the radiator & intercooler)

it has been my experience (and have plenty of it in breaking engines in) that the best way to break an engine in is to bring it up to temperature kindly and then drop the hammer on it and make it go through the rev range, not part of it and NOT outside of it (Note to Ryephile.....you scoff law you....I JUST got the point of your signature picture.....me the ever observant.....tsk, tsk, tsk) cuz of why....well cuz if it blows up when brand new, well, it HAS to be warranty....it wasn't put together right....I wouldn't dream of buying a race engine that didn't come with a dyno sheet.......just wouldn't.
