looking for help. I got my Tachometer fixed but my trip computer does not show instantaneous fuel consumption. I get temp., range, avg fuel cons., avg speed, current speed, but no current fuel consumption. But my Mini adviser insists that the computer does not do this. I know I'm not crazy but before the tach got changed I had this feature. MCS 1/2004 build date. I showed this to my adviser in the owners' manuel and she said it was a "translation error"

along the same lines my '04 MCS does not have navigation. when I try to adjust the speed volume setting by holding down the music note symbol, I get a navigation vol adjustment but no speed volume adjustment. again my manual says that there should be an adjustment for speed vol but my advisor says "mistranslation" WTF!!!!

Who's got the answer?

I just picked up my 2004 MCS, and the trip computer definitely shows current fuel consumption. That's my favorite setting!

Regarding speed volume with H/K, the radio owner's manual says that the H/K system automatically adjusts the speed volume control, whatever that means. To my ears, it isn't working very well. I feel like I need to turn it up when I get to around 40mph or so.

About your tach problem, what was it? I had a problem yesterday (within 24 hours of picking up the car) with my tach--the rpms looked high to me (3000 rpms in 6th at 50mph). I suspected a slipping clutch, though it didn't feel (or smell) like it was slipping, but how could the tach be wrong, right? So I pulled over and it was idling at like 2k rpms. Or so that tach said. Didn't sound anything like 2k to me. I turned the engine off, and the TACH STAYED AT 1000!!!!

Later that evening, with the car parked in the garage, I opened the door and heard a funny clicking sound. Looking frantically for the source, I noticed the speedo was "fluttering" at 0. It didn't stop until I closed the door. Open the door, flutter, close the door, it stopped. This worked several times. I ran inside to grab my key, came back out, opened the door, still fluttered. I put the key in and turned it to 1 or 2 (can't remember which) and it stopped and displayed everything it should. I took the key out, and the problem was gone.

This morning, the tach is fine, the speedo is fine.

I just talked to the Service Advisor, and she said it definitely sounds like an instrument cluster problem. I'm worried that it could be more extensive than that. Anyone else have any ideas? Computer problem perhaps?

OK, your dealer is full of crap. If you have the OBC, one of its readings should be fuel consumption. Just to be clear, there's an average consumption, with you can reset, and an instantaneous consumption, which will change around as you drive. Your dealer is WRONG WRONG WRONG! Get them to fix it, or go to another dealer that will, and remember to complain to MINIUSA so they know this dealer is jerking people around.

As for the H/K, my understanding is that it doesn't have speed sensitive volume. The base stereo has that feature, but not the H/K. You should have gotten a separate owner's manual just for the H/K that details its features.

Regardless of what the manual says the HK does _not_ have speed sensitive volume control. This was a minor annoyance to me as well, but I got over it

Our car was built 12/03 and defanitly has current fuel consumption. Yours doesn't do this at all? That is very wrong.

I've had the wacked out speedo once. It freaked me out, and then never came back. I guess just be glad any problem is cropping up now while you've got tons of warrantly left.

I'd like to know who your dealer is.....

If your car is a 04, and if you ordered OBC and no Nav, it should display instantaneous fuel consumption. Maybe they installed a 03 tach by mistake?

Since your car has HK, it won't have speed vol control. (BMW's manuals are never great.... LOTS of errors, translation or not) Volume compensation is done by the digital signal processor, but doesn't go into effect until about 55mph or so. I found myself increasing the volume at about 40mph or so as well, but once above 55 the HK electronics took care of volume compensation just fine.

Okay just read the other thread you posted.

My guess is that your dealer installed the wrong tachometer (a 03 tachometer) in your car instead of a 04.

It seems to me your dealer gave you a '03 Tach replacement instead of an '04 Tach. Do you still get the speed prompt?

Take it back and don't accept it until they put the proper tach in your car.

Today I listened very carefully with the windows up and sunroof closed, and I thought I detected a very subtle lowering of the volume as I was slowing down between 35 and 0. It could have been my imagination. Nevertheless, the moderate volume level I had selected around 35 or so needed no adjustment once I got down to 0. I think there is some subtle adjustment going on, appropriate for windows up listening.

i got a call from my dealer today apologizing for the error. The annoyance is that I need to take the punisher back in again! I think you may be right. This may be an '03 Tach. ops:

Intresting, I wonder what made them call? Do you suppose MINIUSA was monitoring the thread and gave the dealer a call?

Service managers and dealers rarely in my experience call to say they made a mistake... Especially MINI dealers.

Doubt it, the author didn't post his name or the dealer he is working with, it would be very difficult for MINIUSA to figure out who he is...
