Open Campaign - Coolant Temp Sensor (9/6/2012)

My car (See below) was having program issues and the dealer needed to reset it. When I dropped my car off I was told there was an open campaign for the Coolant Temp Sensor (SIM 17 09 12 DUE) and asked if I wanted them to do that also. I said yes. I do not think they are notifying owners about this. I have not received a notice to date.

So I just wanted everyone to know about this Open Campaign. Because when I talked to SA after everything was done he said the sensor thing could have resulted in a breakdown. Which sounds serious to me.

Not sure what years this effects. Mine is a 2012.

"Breakdown" probably means the car won't run (or won't run well enough that most people would be willing to drive it), not that it blows up. Possibly it even means that it shuts itself down to prevent damage to the engine. So they'd have to tow/flatbed your car to the dealer to work on it.

At the end of the day, the dealer is saving themselves some money, since they're assuming they'll have to do the work sooner or later, and they're building some goodwill with a customer.

LULZ on the Brakedown part!

Love seeing SA speaking to customers as if they were a technician. You would have not broken down, your vehicle would have run rough, and thrown a nice CEL for MAP/Thermostat related issue. Honestly this fix was design to save BMWNA money from having to again redesign or replace a whole t-stat due to a failing sensor.

YUP! Got a CEL about 10 days ago so I scanned it first code was U3FFF which supposed to mean some sort of fuel problem but the car drove fine. Some who had this code states poor octane or cheap gas trigger that code. (Been using 91 octane from Costco with no issues since having the car) Days later P173B code came up which meant coolant sensor failure and P0559 which meant either a heater control circuit malfunction or short circuit of program for the thermostat contol.

A few days later while my wife was driving my kids around the car went into limp mode stated engine malfunction half power! Lucky I was at home when it happen so after I limp the car home (1/2 mile) I scan it and got code P0128 and P173B. So I went and filled up with some top tier Shell gasoline and put another 6 miles on the car still in limp mode hoping the higher grade fuel would help but car still stated engine malfunction half power. The next morning the wouldn't start up. I disconnect the battery for 10mins. Only after a few more attempts it finally started up. I immediately drove it 7 miles to the dealership hoping the car wouldn't die enroute.

Fast forward to today at the dealership and here are the warranty repairs made.

Perform campain #0011990200 check chain tensioner --> Recall #17-05-12
(no leak present)<--

Perform campain #0017560100 coolant temp sensor --> Recall #17-08-12
replaced coolant temperature, adapter lead, spacer holder, cable strap, antifreeze and coolant hose.

They also did an oil change and filter which was already done there at 9K miles.
It's a fun car and it just rounding 13K miles on odometer but I'm really contemplating either getting rid of this car when it's warranty is up or no doubt pay for a full extended warranty!

I took my MINI in today to have a couple of things looked at. While it was in, they performed the Coolant Temp Sensor campaign. They also found an oil pump solenoid leaking (not sure what a solenoid is doing on the pump?) which has contaminated the engine wiring harness.

Should all be done tomorrow.

I thought this recall campaign was only for the Countryman...
Does anyone know if it affects all MINIs?

Mine is a 2012 MCa and it was affected. Not sure about other models or years. I suggest if you are near the end of your warrenty call them and ask.

Is this strictly an under warranty repair issue, and does it cover all 2nd gens?
If the '07 is covered it will be interesting to see what they do, I have added a "few" mods under the bonnet;
M7 adapter for a water temp sensor.
BSH CC
The other stuff shouldn't be in the way!

Not sure. I didn't ask any questions. It wouldn't hurt to call and check.
