I ordered a belt tensioner tool from Promini on Sunday but today they said it is back ordered tell the 25th of June so I am at a loss. Anyone know a place to get one at a reasonable price?

My MINI is a 2008 base and I have a vibration that happens when I am decelerating and turning. My MINI is in the shop right now and it was the heat shield, its the second time its come loose. My MINI was also having problems with low RPM at stops and starting it would stall, turns out my water pump went. The engine would make a bit of a ticking noise and was rough also. My water pump was replaced at 51k miles so I'm PRAYING its still under warranty.

Could anyone verify that the belt should be changed if I can see one hole on the tensioner where you put the pin? I can't see the entire hole yet but 70% of it.. Also, Way if you check this thread again, what is the belt to use for a 17% pulley? link it i'll buy it if you could also comment if i need it... thanks ..

I should have a tool on Friday and will proceed through the weekend and get the SC out. I should probably go ahead and order the replacement but I have a sliver of hope it is still holding oil...

Per this message below, if everything is turning smooth and the gears are in good shape with little/no sign of shavings I'm going to rinse & add oil/flush/repeat and reseal with the Permatex® Anaerobic Gasket Maker. then see if the sound comes back..

We now sell a replacement gear kit for the MINI supercharger. As far as
I know we are the only rebuilder that replaces the water pump drive gears/
PTO gears. We sell a kit which comes with the rear plate (rebuilt with new bearing, seal, and 43 tooth gear, all installed on shaft), 24 tooth gear, shaft seal, needle bearing, sealant, oil, etc.

The cause of the gears failing is the oil leaking from the rear gear box. The
cause of the leak is up for debate. From our observations the cause seems
to be the sealant between the main housing and the rear plate. When we
get the superchargers in for rebuilding the seals seam to be in good shape

(though this could be the cause for some unit's leaks). Once out of oil
the gears last from days to weeks. Once they are making noise there is
little time left before total failure - which remember that your water pump
will stop turning - overheating the motor (then blown head gaskets, etc.).
The supercharger will continue to operate when the gears fail, only the
water pump will be effected.

Of course we also do the entire supercharger w/ water pump drive gears
replacement. The supercharger comes with a 2 year- unlimited miles warranty.

Gear replacement kit $325.00

Supercharger rebuild w/gear replacement $550.00

Update:

I was able to pull the SC. Both the SC and water pump seem to be in good shape. There was less than 2 ounces of oil in the back end but it was a decent tea color. I have flushed out the front but not opening it. The lobes are the black ones (2006) and there isn't any signs of wear except one scratch on a couple about a fingernail in length. I used the anaerobic gasket maker on the back end of the supercharger and plan to fill it up today and fill the front. Perhaps the engine noise is the idler pulley or belt tensioner. I don't hear any noise turning them so I'll continue to investigate those. I did change the crank sensor gasket and dipstick gasket and cleaned up the engine.

Last two pics are the inside cover and inside gears of the PTO. More to come. thanks for the help !!

My 04 MCS started making the same noise not too long ago, but my super charger, water pump, thermostat and belt were replaced about 4000 miles ago. Also, my noise is sporadic in that I can hear it sometimes when I start the Mini, but if I turn off my Mini and restart it once or twice, the sound is gone and might not come back for a day or two. Also, in never seems to happen on a cold start. Always after driving, as little as 10 minutes, turning off and then starting back up shortly (15 mins) there after.

I currently have about 150K miles. Also I do have another sound I thought was my A/C compressor, which I replaced, but I'm thinking might be my belt tensioner.

Is your sound sporadic? Next time mine does it, I'm going to pop the hood and see if I can locate it.

Yep, hoping when I put it back together, the sound is gone.. I hear Idler pulley or belt tensioner but I think mine are fine so I'm at a loss. Going to put er back together and see if it still has the noise...

Well I'm back on the road. It was really fun taking the car apart and putting it back together. I had the most basic tools.. My torx wrench is like a pocket knife style It took a long time but I got it back together nicely.

Most notable items in reassembly:

Reattach the bypass valve before the drivers side horn.

Leave the crush tube bolts off until you get the aluminum bumper cover in place

My car is still making a bit of a knock or something. I'm going to take it to the dealer and let them try to diagnose it and then probably try to fix it again myself. Good times taking it apart and reassembling though. It would be nice to be a mechanic and still bring home the same $ but don't think that's happening in this lifetime peace! I'm off to MINIcross in Chicago on July 8th and pumped for that!

One last follow up. Back to MINI today. They said bad timing chain tensioner. 246$ later and Lil Mick sounds good as new. If only I had found a thread on it while it is was in pieces I'm glad to know it was done right. They said every thing else was in good shape. I did get the SC oil changed and realized how easy it is to do an automatic trans change. All in all, it was really fun tearing down the car and putting it back together. Looking forward to learning more about brakes and suspension next. Cheers!

Glad you found the solution....guess I'll be looking into changing out the timing chain tensioner.
