Underside motor covered in oil

I have an oil seepage issue where the oil coats the bottom of the motor, oil pan, control arms, etc.. I was pretty sure that this was the oil pan gasket, but i looked underneath and it actually seems to be coming off a little block mounted to the engine block itself.. Is this an oil pan gasket thats really bad or something else?

Try cleaning off the block/underside of the car...
Then let it idle a bit...and look to see where the oil is dripping from...
try to let it idle long enough to let a new drip form...but turn it off before the fan blows too much...
Your pan is likely leaking (like 99% of gen1 mini's), the question is is the leak bad enough to need replacement, and is anything else leaking.

Yea i knew about that, but it seems to me that alot of the oil is coming from that large square in the picture

I cant really tell from the pic, is this on the driver or passanger side?

On the passanger side, next to the oil filter housing is a small goldish fined box. This is MINI's attempt at an oil cooler. Its sealed to the engine with some cheap rubber "O"rings. They can fail pretty easy if the bolts are loosened or the engine has some high mileage.

Outside of that the oil pan is the culprit. Who would have ever thought that puting an engine mount on the pan would cause problems, especally the way we drive theese cars? I have seen quite a few leaky oil pan gaskets on MINIs, it's a pretty comon occourance. But the gasket is cheap, and its an excuse to crawl under the car and get dirty (While having a few beers) if you are mechanicly inclined.

Happy new year!

Take a look at this thread. It may give you an idea where to look after you clean up the oil.

I would definitely recommend replacing the oil pan seal. My Mini looked almost identical to yours and had oil leaking between engine and pan. Only costs about $20 and can be done in about an hour. As for the other leaks I am still working them one at a time. Unfortunately I have the CVT and am working on its many issues first.

Did you notice this thread is over 6 years old? I hope they got it fixed by now.
