Odd electrical/electronic problem

Hi everyone.

This morning while driving into work (50ish mph) the nav display and tach display errored for about two seconds with "steering assistance system failure." Literally, if you blinked you'd miss it. Freaked me out, but the rest of the commute - 20 minutes was fine.

Then I pull into the parking garage and start going up the ramps (6th floor) and the whole dash flashed off for a bit, then back on. No errors.

Any thoughts? I'm praying it's all golden when I get back to the car, but if anyone had this - is it a sign of more issues to come? What was the cause? I'll get it into service if I can get more info.

Cheers.

Sounds like a bad battery or loose battery connection. Or the wiring on the power steering motor is chafed (a few people have had this catch fire).

Bit of an update. Noticed that this looks to be RPM related - so I'm guessing Alternator or voltage regulator issue. Calling dealer today.

Yesterday it happened twice, once just losing the nav and audio, once with the steering warning. This morning I lost audio twice, nav screen was fine. I noticed that my dome light was flickering when the engine was running too yesterday, seems like the flicker matched the shake of the car and I could hear a whine from the engine area. Bad bearing on alternator?

This morning I watched the voltage meter on my radar detector - it fluctuated between 12.9 and 14.9!! Crazy.

More on it as it comes.

Car's back. OK, I almost need to give up my man card. It was a loose positive cable on the battery. DOH. I never thought to check because that was never touched. GRRR.

Well, better than a "sorry, your radar detector blew out ____ please pay us $1999.95"

Cheers.
