abs module replacement

Has anyone replaced their abs/dsc control module with a unit from a salvage yard? I had mine diagnosed as being bad and the part is $1100 plus. My car is a 2003 cooper s. The shop told me a salvage unit may not work because it could not be coded for the car. But others I have spoken to said as long as you get a unit from a similar car you should not have any problems. Thanks in advance for your help.

I may have to do the same thing and my understanding is that you can use a new ABS Module, but you have to go to a Mini Dealer to get it coded for your car. I think the coding is the expensive part (although $800 seems ridiculous) because I believe the modules go for around $300. WayMotorWorks has them at that price.

Because it needs coding I was going to have it rebuilt, which would just require you to mail your module to someone and they would fix it for around the price of a new one (without needing to recode). I didn't find anyone to do this, but I kind of gave up after emailing a few company's because I cannot afford it at the moment anyway.

Edit: Way's ABS modules are used, but I would probably buy used or get it rebuilt. From reading about it it doesn't seem like ABS modules fail because they are old, they just fail for random reasons.

I could be wrong here, but I believe all the modules (BCM, EWS, etc.) are coded with your VIN, and a used unit would need to be re-coded. In addition, the ABS module is also
auto/man trans specific. There are outfits that will do that, and for a lot less than $ 800.
