New Turbo @ Less Than 30K Miles? Really??

Yup...and a new water pump on my 2009 Clubman. 28K miles. I'm stunned.

The dealer has "Gilligan" until further notice. A small plus is I get a new S Countryman as a loaner. Small consolation to be sure.

It's under warranty, but dang! A freakin' turbo and water pump??

Anybody else had this same problem, or have any idea what's up with this catastrophic failure?

My 2002 GTI needed a water pump and other bits at 28k. While they were in there they did the timing belt also, just had to pay for the belt.

Its not unheard of but does make you wonder.

My '09 MCS is still going strong at just under 33k.

Sorry to hear.

Thanks for the replies!

As disconcerting as this whole debacle is, I've got to give a shout-out to MINI of Pensacola, and Shawn the Service Manager there. So far, they've been most helpful.

Just spoke with them and the turbo is supposed to be delivered today. The problem seems to be that the impeller in the turbo was wobbling on the impeller shaft. Why, I don't know, but it has caused major problems.

I'm just glad that it's under warranty. The part alone is around $1800.

Amen to that. Maybe bearings went out or something? I'm not familiar with the anatomy of these turbos, but maybe...?

On the bright side, you'll now have a turbo and water pump that's brand new!

I'm curious...How did you know there was a problem? A sound, a vibration, lack of performance or an engine trouble display from the ECU?

What's the big whoop? You're getting new stuff for free. Stop spreading negativity.

It's kinda hard not to spread negativity in the "Stock Problems/Issues" forum don't you think?

OK...thanks for the comments. Got it back Friday. Total bill, $3,600 P&L. All under warranty, thank God!

@Autodoc - First thing I noticed was a temporary power drop - RPM increased without producing power. Lasted about 3 seconds then ran fine. Next day, the yellow check engine light came on and the power drop became the norm. High RPMs, no power. It's kind of like running old-timey regular gas in a new engine. No knock, pings or other warnings, just a sudden, dangerous lag in engine power...esp when pulling out in traffic. Never had any other problems at all.

@countryboy - I'm not quite sure I understand your comment. I've never had a car break down when it didn't hack me off. If me stating my problem in a forum with "problem" in the title, and expressing my dismay is negativity to you, I apologize. Fixed or not, under warranty or not, it is what it is; a let-down, an inconvenience, and highly disappointing.
