Fuel gauge not working

Lately I have been having an intermittent problem with my fuel gauge. Sometimes the gauge doesn't work and stays just below the empty line with the light on and my range on my trip computer displays ---. From what I've read on here it is a fairly common problem, but I am having trouble finding an answer on how to fix it. I've read it could be the sensors in the tank or a gauge problem. And I've tried disconnecting the battery for a bit to see if that cleared it as I read somewhere online that that could fix it too. Anyone have any ideas? The problem is getting kind of annoying now.

I've had this happen occasionally, when it happens, just reach back and beat on the vertical part of the floor, passenger side, just below the rear seat cushion. It's worked for me every time

I have had this happen after I top off the tank, its only when I fill the car tottaly up that I will get a red corn, and then as I drive the guage starts to go up, so now I just never fill up all the way and I dont have a issue

It's been 24hrs and still the gauge won't go above the low line. This is the worst it's been. Usually it corrects itself within a few drive cycles. I even stopped for gas again today to see if that would do the trick, but no luck. Could it be one or both of the sending units in the tanks? The car only has 24k on it. Of course when it comes to MINI's that doesn't matter really!
