Trust me, you do NOT want your bypass valve butterfly to be left open, you'll get zero boost, and the MCS can't get out of it's own way without boost. I found this out the hard way. I tied the bypass valve open accidentally; when I pushed the throttle, basically nothing happened! :smile:

I read this whole thread in its entirety yesterday. Before that, I really hadn't paid attention to the yo-yo. I had always thought something must be wrong with my driving... Damn, it yo-yos!!!!

well.... truthfully I haven't checked it..... and I haven't ever reset the on board
fuel milage readout. I'm gathering a sort of life time average.... so the onboard has not registered a big decline.... but then it wouldn't yet because there are about 9K miles to average...

This is my toy. I want it to go fast. Mileage isn't an issue on this car. Especially compared to my BIG V8 SUV. (please, please don't anybody start on SUV bashing)

I also have the Yo-Yo. I took delivery on December it is driving me nuts!!! Please, add my VIN # TD77948, Manufactured 10/03, to the list. Wish you the best luck in getting MINI to design a permanent fix to this problem! :evil:

MM2 is back in my garage, now with a fresh ECU. The verdict: The throttle overshoot seems to be software - the new ECU didn't do a darn thing to drivability. While this doesn't really help expidite a fix for the Yo-Yo, it does point, again, to Siemens crappy software algorithms

The only thing I can say now - everyone call 1-866-ASK-MINI (Monday through Friday, ?9am to 9pm?) and forward your concerns about the Yo-Yo. Please be nice and professional to the people behind the phones; perhaps read off my Yo-Yo Summary on the previous page here. We can only hope a mass-influx of Yo-Yo complaints will hurry a fix.

I called ASK-MINI and girl was very nice, said they are aware of YO YO and will forward my complaint onto the "powers that be" She was in central Ohio. Somehow I thought she'd be in New Jersey.

oops :smile: manufactured 6/27/03. the woman i spoke with today at mini was very nice and seemed to be informed about the yo-yo issue. also i told her about the ever increasing chips and pits in my windscreen. please let her know if this is also a problem as well as the yo-yo. thanks again ryan and everyone else. :smile:

I have a bit of beans to spill, but want to do it carefully:

Basically, MINIUSA is aware of this thread and my research. They've been looking into the Yo-Yo for quite some time. They are working on fix, but the timeline is blurry. While they've found my research helpful, it seems that the engineering department has found another way to solve the Yo-Yo. I will find out more specific information when the time is right.

My impressions from talking with MINI are that the fix should not impact the fuel economy like my modified bypass valve does (about 10% loss). Also, I would not expect a solution to come into being for at least another month or two - this is just the nature of the large-corporation beast for correcting production issues. Overall, I'm thankful that MINI is pursuing a fix. I will ask that they will forward the result to me prior to its public release to verify the effectiveness - I believe this is an appropriate request.

itsthedirtybird - well kinda. Since eliminating the bypass valve also eliminates that lag, you will notice smoother drivability and a quicker power ramp up - not increased torque per se, but quicker power to the ground. In short, if you race your MINI, you should already be eliminating the bypass valve from your MCS. Careful, however; since power ramp up is significantly quicker, it becomes much easier to break the tires loose!

I've been bitching and moaning about my HORRIBLE yo-yo since July of '02, and all I've gotten is corporate lines of bulls__t. I don't think MINI gives a rat's *** whether or not customers stay loyal and become repeat buyers of other BMW products.

 

Just did the ZIP fix and man what a difference. I don't get to drive my car much since I travel for work so why not set performance to the max for when I do get to drive it.

I would still like to have the correct fix but even then I think I will still ZIP it shut after BWM does their thing.

Oh yeah - I got a 10/03 build not sure of my vin info right this sec

 

sort of like the collier trophy, i think we should start a galloping gerty/tacoma narrows bridge research in aero elastic phenomenon trophy.

i nominate ryephile for this excellent engineering.

p.s. this reminds me of a story from one of my flight instructors, a marine corps fighter pilot. he said so many of the F4 phantom systems gave problems "we just wired half of 'em shut."

I'm new to this forum, but I would like to thank you from the top, middle and bottom of my heart for your over-the-top efforts to diagnose this problem and offer not only 1, but 2, solutions.

From just this thread alone, it appears that BMW / MiniUSA are very similar to VWoA...that worries me a lot. I'm just glad that I found this forum.

The Mini is, in all appearances, a wonderful, fun, exciting, vibracious car that's a blast to drive and own. I certainly like all the camraderie (I know I can't spell that!) here and even though I'm having second thoughts about "joining the club," this thread documenting your efforts is casting those thoughts away.

Just performed the Ryephile zip-tie bypass valve mod and am thoroughly impressed. The Yo-yo is gone, I tried very hard to get it to rear its ugly head, but nowhere to be found. I'll have to wait for the ECU to adapt to the new bypass-less setup and then if it does return I'll be sure to let you guys know. Other things I've noticed are that throttle response is much much better, especially when leaning into it in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear from about 3000rpm on up. My favorite party however, has to be the fact that the Alta intake no longer makes that lousy queefing / whistling sound. I think it used to do this because the air flowing out of the bypass-valve butteryfly and into the throttle-body butterfly would somehow interact with each other. With the bypass permanently shut and the set screw backed off a half-turn she feels great. Best part is it only took me about half an hour with pliers, a razor to cut the plastic rod-end and a screwdriver to do/undo the Alta hose. I'll report back with fuel consumption if I notice any detrimental results. Ryephile, you are my hero! I'm going to look into having a permanent block-off plate made for the bypass valve if all things stay as is.

 

Kinda OT: Cool spring calculator with formulae for natural frequency, calculating spring force, etc. Please pass this on to BMW!

Has anyone considered the possibility of a class-action legal suit against MINI to get them hustling on this fix? maybe there are some legal experts on this board that would understand the feasability of this as a solution to get MINI moving.

In any case, if they are working on a fix that is available in a month or two, thats another story. I hate it when litigation is abused, but this seems to me like a responsable use of the justice system...
