My 06 MINI is sick :( Need good MINI mechanic in Northern VA

My 06 JCW has been mysteriously leaking coolant and oil. After being unable to locate the sources, I finally broke down and took it to the dealer (MINI of Sterling) for a diagnosis.

Turns out I have a coolant leak from the thermostat, so I need a new gasket and thermostat installed. I'm also leaking oil from the crank sensor, so I need a new O ring there.

And as a special bonus my lower control arm bushings are apparently torn, so they need to be replaced as well.

All told, the dealer wants about $1500 for the repairs. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like this is high. Does anyone know of a good MINI mechanic in the Northern VA area who might be able to do this for a more reasonable price?

Mine started leaking @ 14K miles so the dealer replaced the thermostat housing with an updated version.

I'm surprised they don't send out a recall notice because their TSB documents the problem...

Yeah that would be nice...

I found a recommendation over a DC Metro MINIs for Mach V Motorsports in Sterling and gave them a call. They want about half what the dealer quoted for the repairs If anyone here has had dealings with them I'd love to know how it went.

I think Mach V does good work. I've only been there for a rear sway bar but I know they've done a lot of good work for other MINI owners and they know a lot about MINIs. I'm sure DCMM folks will be happy to comment about their experience.

I had MINI of Sterling repair a leaking crank sensor seal, which was $2 for the O-ring but $207 in labor because they have to take the front end of the car apart. MoS does give you a 20% discount (see website for coupons) if you spend more than $1000 in repairs, but their prices are still high compared with an indy shop like Mach V.

Good luck.

If you need control arm bushings go with the Powerflex they will last alot longer.

The crank sensor oring is a pretty common leak.

Thanks for all of the helpful input. I've got an appointment with Mach V this Thursday for all of the repairs.

I read a few of the bushing threads here and am definitely going with Powerflex.
