My girlfirends Mini(2003 not-s) has stalled while driving three times in the last few months for appanrenly no reason. After a few minutes on the side of the road it will start again with no problem. She had taken it to the dealer twice but they can never figure out the problem. Has anyone else had this type of problem and were you able to get it fixed?

Sounds like an ECU problem maybe? Have they considered that?

This problem happened to me once when I was waiting on the traffic light. Should I take my MC to dealer ASAP?

Looks like the car needs the following replaced:

1) Engine wiring harness
2) Throttle body control module
3) Reflash DME

Solved!

Usually it is the MC with CVT and the ECU needs to be examined and updated to v.36
If this dealer cannot troubleshoot the problem and you have another dealer nearby then try the other dealer.
This is a known problem but in some MINIs it is not so easy to solve.

From what she's said, it doesn't sound like they have considered anything. I think they did some type of engine diagnostic or a test drive but since nothing went wrong then, they coulldn't do anything...twice.

I asked her more about it yesterday and got some more specifics...I guess the symptoms are a little different than what I originally said. It has only happened twicence when she was starting from a complete stop at a stoplight(moderate temp, no precipitaion), and once when she was accelerating from a slow coast(appx 15MPH, cool weather, no precipitation). Both times the car started again after 30 secs to one minute, not a few minutes like I originally posted.

Does any of this change your opinion of what might be wrong?

What is the ECU(in not very mini mechanical savy)? Sounds computer related.

Again, I'm not very mini savy, so what is the DME? Again it sounds computer related.

Yes she does have the CVT(Constant Velecity Transmission?). By saying that this is not always easy to solve are you implying that sometimes it doesn't get solved?

Is this just another version of the chronic 'stumble' problem(which she does get sometimes, just never really cared), but insted of a pause it just completely stalls?

The DME is the Siemens2000 engine management computer.

Just do as I say....

Have dealer check the 3 items I posted before...

And problem solved.
