scheduled maintaince
I bought my 03 S with 75,000 miles on it...the dealer had no idea about what has been done to it...now has about 81,000. Other than the oil changes, what required maintainence should this car need in the near future? I do get a squeaks when the clutch is engaged, usually in the morning when it is cold..there is also a rattle when the car is in neuteral and the clutch is disengaged...any insight on these matters is appreciated
When I purchase a used car and the service history is vague, I just start fresh.
Now a have reference point to start my service schedule without guessing.
Replace the:
Oil & Filter
Air Filter
Cabin Filter
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
Coolant ( check the Coolant Tank for leaks )
Transmission Fluid
Power Steering Fluid ( check the Power Steering lines for leaks )
Have the Brakes checked or replace everything including the rotors & fluid.
Check the dates on the tires, and if its over 6 years replace all 4.
Of course if you can't do most of this service yourself, it will be expensive.
The end result is peace of mind and hopefully trouble free driving !
Keep an eye on the clutch for slipping but the throw out bearing may need replacement if its noisy. When it goes, replace the whole clutch and the throw out bearing all at once; its less expensive since its already all apart.
Happy Motoring ! ! !

I don't replace brakes unless something is not functioning well and have never had a tire over 6 years old. However, do have the brake fluid flushed if it is unknown.
Go to a MINI dealer and see if they can pull up a service history - hopefully at least some services were performed at a dealer while the car was still within its 3/36k "free" maintenance period.
If not, I would go through the "Inspection I" and "Inspection II" checklists and perform all of those items. What does your OBC service countdown indicator say? If it's still sitting at "Oil Service" or "Inspection I" and the countdown is way in the negative, that may be a bad sign.
As for MINI-specific stuff, see if there are any signs of leakage at the seam that joins the upper and lower halves of the plastic coolant tank (at the middle of the firewall). Also, have a good mechanic check the condition of the control arm bushings at the front of the car. Those are usually shot by 80k miles.
Make sure the power steering motor fan is still turning - it's under the engine, in the vicinity of the oil pan. Look for a roundish black plastic fan grill.
Lube the rear hatch hinges, since they're prone to freezing up and bending the sheet metal they're attached to. Also, look under the plastic door sill covers and make sure you don't have any rust starting, since that was a problem with the earlier MINIs as well.

And the rattle when your car is in neutral, mine has been doing it for the 2 years i have had it.. and my friends mini does it, oh ya, and 6/11 of my clubs does it.
Heres a good thread on that https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...clutch-in.html
