05 Mini S, Stalls on approach to stop.
05 Mini S, Stalls on approach to stop.
Whenever I am approching a stop sign or stoplight and I take my foot off the gas and just let the car slow down on it's own, and as I'm approching the stop and push the clutch in the car will stall. It will start right back up and run fine. It only stalls under this one condition. Has anyone experienced this?
Does this happen every time you come to a stop? If you hold you foot on the gas just above idle will it still stall. Maybe a very dirty/oily throttle that restricts the valve just enough to stall at idle. Obviously when you open the throttle when accelerating the restriction does not cause a problem because the throttle is open a lot wider
but not in an 05 car. You might have a vacuum leak in one of the hoses. Check all hoses, then, like in the previous reply, check the throttle body and other parts in your fuel and air system. The Mass Airflow sensor may be dirty. If you've never changed your fuel filter, your car being 5 years old, it might be time to look into it. Also, maybe clean out your intercooler and other routine maintenance things.
Also possible that the issue is electrical, but since the car starts right up, it may be a weak spark. Plugs and wires might come to mind.
Not knowing much about your car and maintenance patterns, it's hard to diagnose.
That Daggum Stalling Feeling
All, Just wanted to let you know that I solved this problem in my 05 convertible with an auto tranny by doing several things. Each one seemed to improve it all, and then the last one blew the roof off. The guys at AUTOZONE, of all places, not a Mini Dealer made this all possible.
On top of the stalling about a week ago, i was getting very rough running with bucking and stalling...Service engine light and DSC lights on telling me that I am an idiot for driving...haha. DSC did not go off with the switch...so I went to my favorite AutoZone Store in Thorndale PA. GENIUS.... They put the little computer decoder ring on Mini and found a code saying cylinder 3 was dead....OH no..... I asked so what should we do.
They said either plugs, wires and ignition coil were probably the issue, or all three. I had recently replace the plugs so that was not it....they found in stock an ignition coil built just for Mini. AWESOME! I also talked to them about the stalling issue. Bad ignition coil and SEAFOAM was their answer.....
Here is what we did.
1. Seafoam in the gas tank at fill up (50% of a bottle)
2. New plugs
3. New ignition wires
4. New ignition coil (not a bmw part but stock from AutoZone only problem there was mounting screws on original had collars and did not fit in the new one, so I had to get another set of non-collar screw from my favorite hardware store...any justification for the hardware store and I'm a happy guy...)
5. This one was the real kicker. The AutoZone dude told me to pull a vacuum hose from the brake or anywhere and with the engine running have the vacuum of the engine suck in that delightful seafoam juice (like ice tea on a hot day) directly into the engine....Mini bucked, Mini stalled, Mini coughed, and gasped....(my cooper's name is Mini, how original, I know). I put the vacuum hose back on it normal mounting, and went for a ride. There was a HUGE trail of white smoke that followed me for about 3 miles. I thought oh no, what did I do....BUT
I punched Mini to the floor, asking for all he had...what a performance....Fantastically improved power, way smoother acceleration, and guess what, I came to an abrupt halt at a red light, and no stall or hint of stall. I drove him hard on our country roads for another 30 minutes with frequent stops at stop signs and traffic lights. Guess what, no sign of stalling, no hesitation, no slipping feeling in the tranny (darn you CVT), nothing... don't understand the last part with the tranny, but who cares...it is like new, maybe better.
I am ear to ear grinning and can't wait for my next ride to see how Mini behaves. I am hopeful...and excited.
Have fun with this...
