Fuel gauge broken

My gauge is stuck at full when I only put $20 in. I drove about 30 miles and it's still at full. Any ideas what could be the problem?

It's an 06 mcs

for me 30 miles is about a gallon and it isn't unusual for me to go a lot more than that b4 the gauge moves....

has your experience been different? Is this different then last time? Didi the pump let you 'top off' higher then usual - some do . . .

But I only put $20 in. That always gives me around 3/4 tank. Instead it went all the way full.

I know some GEN2 MINI's have had the issue with sulfer on the fuel tank probes...they say some Techron will remove it and fix it on the GEN2 cars...not sure if the GEN1 MINI has a mechanical probe, or electrical....so it may or may not help. But I have not heard of gen1 drivers having this issue...so it might be a different issue! But might be worth a try!

Thanks for the help guys but I think I found the problem....

First off, I live in NJ. Us spoiled people do not pump our own gas. So I came to conclusion that the man who pumped my gas accidentally gave me a full tank with only $20. I was driving it today and the gas gauge went down a little. Also I'm gonna be honest, I RARELY fill my tank up. I always put $20 in. So I have little/no experience knowing how long it stays at full tank.

So basically it turned out that the guy gave me extra gas and nothings wrong. Good came out of something I thought was bad.

If you don't like the site search feature, you can use the Google site search feature....

Search within a specific website (site
Google allows you to specify that your search results must come from a given website. For example, the query
  • [ iraq site:nytimes.com ] will return pages about Iraq but only from nytimes.com. The simpler queries [ iraq nytimes.com ] or [ iraq New York Times ] will usually be just as good, though they might return results from other sites that mention the New York Times. You can also specify a whole class of sites, for example [ iraq site:.gov ] will return results only from a .gov domain and [ iraq site:.iq ] will return results only from Iraqi sites.

Which red light do you have? The tank low LINE on the gas gauge and/or the other one that indicates you are in the reserve (circular one) (at least with the gauge package)?

Safest thing to do now is to just use the trip odometer....and buy gas every few hundred miles, and top it off...nothing wrong with a full tank!!

thanks for the tip Zip,as i said instead of the guage going up from 1/4 it went down to 0 with the red light on the fuel guage E mark on,i've had this happen like 3 yrs ago fuel was very low and filled up went back to the station believeing the guy had put in no gas, couple of on/off the ignition and it fired up,then a year later it stuck again, the fix was the thread i found here resetting the dashboard using the speedo reset button, actually when the ignition is off the needle falls down to invisible when turned on it jumps up to 0.Having seen this twice before i'd like to reset the dash before going after sensors in the tank,i've changed fuel filter so know where they are.Anybody did up that thread on resetting the dash using the ignition and the speedo reset button.

My issue for when the tank is full and the gas gauge reads empty was diagnosed as bad fuel level sensors. I'll be replacing them soon... but I'm not too worried as they only act up when the tank is full and once it gets to 3/4 it works every time.
