Streering Rack Removal

Hello MINI Members,

My seals are leaking on my power steering rack. The dealer wants $2k to fix it. I've ordered a rack for the car and need to figure out how to pull it out.

Do I drop the subframe? If so do I need to be aware of certain wires/hoses or linkages? I have experience rebuilding engines and transmissions so I don't think this is worth the big payout to the dealer. It seems almost impossible to find a Bently manual where I live.

I have a 2003 with the CVT transmission.

Thanks

Jeff

looking at the service manual doesn't show dropping the subframe. But I probably would just for the extra space you'll have to work. There is a great write of on here for dropping sub frame. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ll-how-to.html

And if you haven't done it yet while the subframe is out change out your rear control arm bushings. I have the Alta psrs but anything is better than a worn out set of stock bushings.

Ps on dropping the subframe i did not remove the ball joints I only unbolted the shocks and calipers and dropped it that way.
