Need air conditioning compressor, not gold plated
Need air conditioning compressor, not gold plated
I need to replace the A/C compressor. Like every other BMW part, it's gold plated and costs a freaking fortune! Does anyone know of a used one taken out to save weight, or from a wrecked car?
This might be the last time I make a major repair. Last year it was a supercharger bearing. This year front end suspension parts. You HAVE to have a really good paying job to own these cars (as in not construction unless you're a developer, even then nowadays).
Please PM me if you can help.

You can buy remanfactured/rebuilt ones on line for lots less than oem.
Have you posted/searched on the marketplace?!
I know it is a stupid question, but heck, why not!?
Check any wrecking yards for "used" compressors?

If you want used, there's plenty on ebay for $150 or so. Here's the link to one of them. I also have a link to a online store that has OEM AC Compressor replacements for $380 (You get $80 back when you send them your old one) so $300. It's on my favorites list at home, I'll post it tonight.
Here's the slightly used one on ebay for $150.00.

If the wifes car needs a compressor, I was going to give these guys a shot (I am a gambler by nature.)
They have good feedback, and include a drier which is needed if the system is empty, but always a good thing to replace.

I can't say anymore than that, but at less than $275 after your $30 core refund, it seems to be worth a shot.

Amjer has a good question above... Do we know it's the compressor or just the clutch assembly. These clutches wear out and won't engage the compressor, hence the "need" for a new compressor. It might save all of alot of $'s to just replace the clutch when the compressor is good but won't engaged. Anyone know the price for just the clutch?

I don't know if this helps, but here is my story.
I picked up my mini from a dodge dealer 3 weeks ago.(my wife works there)
anywho's.... They let me keep it overnight, and I completed the paper work the next day. after signing the ....dotted line... and I went home to pick up a check stub and the other random car buying stuff. on the way back to the dealership the A/C went out... I talked to my wife's boss when I got back, and told him my problems. he said he would take care of it.
5 days later they replaced my A/C compressor free of charge, but the "ticket" did go bye my wife's desk for the "charge" it was $645.00 some odd dollars ( I didn't pay a cent)... so basically what I am saying is that some random dodge dealer paid less than $175.00 for the part and the rest was labor.... so if some random dodge dealer can pick up a a/c for 175$ and replace...... well. I hope my story helps.

AC Compressor replaced
Hi all, I have replaced the AC Compressor on my 2004 MINI Cooper S .
I decided not to get a used AC compressor. Reasoning is this. If these specific compressors have a tendacy to fail, who knows what life is left on a used.
Therefore, I went with an OEM Delphi rebuilt AC Compressor. (Link below)
The kit contained a (rebuilt AC Compressor, New drier, set of O rings, and a bottle of oil) for $284 + shipping. I paid $7 extra for expeditied shipping because of approaching travels. The kit did Not include an expansion valve.
The kit arrive well packed, and in Like-new condition.
I found an independent guy in the Minneapolis area who did the install in 3 hours. (evac, flushed the lines, AC compressor, drier, and recharge) He found that the old compressor had a failed coil on the front that didn't spin when engaged. Therefore, the compressor didn't break up, just quit working.
Note: The mechanic checked the integrity of the rebuilt compressor before he started the install, just incase. . . Checked out fine. He also cleaned and reused the expansion valve.
The AC works great! Still a new part to the car. I have driven for one week/3000 miles with no sign of a problem.
Thanks to "oxybluecoop" for pointing me in this direction, and the link. I appreciate the help.
Here's the link I used.
