Air Conditioning
Air Conditioning
My wife has a 2008 Cooer since brand new. She loves it and had 2 happy years. Recently it just passed 20000mile mark and AC stop working. Green light (snow flake) light is on but no cool air.... Is it common to have AC issue on new Cooper?

Ok… This is how it is going… My wife just took her 2008 Cooper (20K miles) to a dealer for repairing AC. The Dealer noticed that the windshield of my wife’s car has been replaced recently and also saw a few small dents on hood. A windshield and hood was damaged by kicked up rock from truck a few weeks ago. The dealer claims the issue of AC is a compressor and likely damaged by when she hit a rock. Therefore it is not covered on warranty and wants us to contact our insurance company and claim for it…It will cost about $1700 to repair/service. They also say the AC compressor of Cooper can be damaged easy by just hitting a pot holes….. I do not feel right about it at all…. If his statement is accurate many owners must have issue with AC especially with sports suspension cars. They are very harsh ride on bumpy road and AC will get damaged often. We always owned Audi and this is the first Mini/BMW we owned and are very surprised to get this treatment from this dealer…… She really loves the car and looking forward with long term relationship. However, our thoughts on the product are lo longer the same… Any thoughts on this dealer’s claim? Or suggestion?

They're playing smokes and mirrors. Definitely dodgy.
Few dents on the bonnet ain't gonna do jack on the air conditioning.
And looking at http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...45&hg=64&fg=50
It appears to be that the air compressor is actually pretty deep inside the engine bay. Looking at the diagram. I say it's behind the radiator and below the turbo. So if some pot hole is going to destroy it, there will be some other engine parts that will give way first.
That's my take, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If you had front end damage, they are correct. If you just had cosmetic damage from road debris, you are correct.
You need to prove the damage that occured with photos or insurance estimate then try again to explain things to them...
