oil change

This is my first post. Bought our first Mini last fall. 2003 MC Chili red with white stripes and American flag, 118,000 miles. Your forums are great. I've spent hours reading and learning more about the ups and downs of mini ownership. I do have a question about oil changes. Several people have described a mesh screen with spring inside the filter housing. When I changed my oil I noticed there was no such device in the housing. Not even an indication that anything had broken out. Just a shallow well where the end of the filter fits. I asked my nearest dealer about it and they said it should be the one with mesh screen. So I ordered it for around $58. When I tried to install it the threads wouldn't go. Also, the threads look different. Machined rather than cast. I'm returning the new housing and reinstalling the old one. Does anyone know if this will cause a problem? I can't be sure if this housing has been on the full 118000 miles but I assume it has . The engine runs great though we have put less than 1000 miles on it.
