Mini wont go into gear

Hi everyone, my wife has a 02 mini auto/trans and we were just backing out of the driveway the other night and when i put it in drive i heard a slight pop not very hard at all and the engine just revs when i hit the gas, acts as if its in neutral no matter what gear its in, Reverse or Drive, and a faint sound like that of a bicycle chain off of its sprocket...any advice? we live about an hr and half from a good mech. beside redneck ones that dont know anything about minis. thank you....

Is this a regular Cooper, or an S? If regular Cooper, it sounds like your CVT belt snapped. Not good - requires transmission replacement.

Yep. A new CVT is a minimum $5k replacement. The CVTs are no longer produced because they had so many failures, and they make no parts, so all you can get is a remanufactured replacement.
