CEL "increased emissions" and mystery chime problem

[SIZE=4]I'm new to the forum. I have a 2008 Clubman S with 18K miles on it. The car has two persistent problems. The first is that the CEL light comes on intermittently, with the "increased emissions" warning. The second is that a warning chime comes on once each time I drive -- with no associated warning symbol or code.

The dealer thinks the CEL is an engine vacuum leak of some sort. So far, they've replaced the oil dip stick and part of the charge pipe. They've also replaced an air intake hose that leads to the mechanism inside the car that enhances the engine sound in the compartment. As for the mystery chime, they can't duplicate it (probably because they don't test drive the car for very long when they have it and there's no associated code).

Help! Has anyone else had either of these problems? The dealer has had this car in the shop for 8 service days to figure this out (on two separate occasions) and so far, no luck. They think they've fixed it, then the CEL light returns within a day or so of leaving the shop. Also, I continue to hear the mystery chime once each time I drive. (And it's not the cold weather warning.)

Thanks.

You may be able to help us with a little more info.

When the CEL is thrown what is the actual code?

And at what point in your drive do you hear the chime? Is it always x minutes into the drive or is it random?

Are you sure there is no warning light such as on the speedo and not on the tach. Some of them come on and go off very quickly like the TPMS one on may car once in a while. It chimes and the display only shows up on the speedo for about 1/2 second and no indication on the tach.

Code

Thanks for responding. The code is 2B64.

As for the mystery chime, lately it comes on about 10-15 minutes after I start driving. This has happened so many times -- and I haven't seen a symbol anywhere.

Great code. Have not seen that on a MINI before but on many BMW's (not all though) it is "camshaft sensor inlet bank2" What ever that means. Does not sound like a vacuum leak to me although it could be.

As for the "chime" that is strange. Does it have the same sound as the seat belt chime or is it a different tone?

Also do you have OEM NAV in your car?

The car has OEM Nav -- the chime is different than the seatbelt chime.

Here's an update. After six different attempts by two different dealers, the CEL "increase emissions" light and warning continues to reappear. The dealer claims it is a tiny air leak somewhere, but can't seem to find it. This is quite frustrating. Any suggestions?

Did this ever get fixed for you? I had this problem in the 3rd month of ownership with loss of power. That was August 09. The high pressure fuel pump was replaced. Then, just last week, the orange engine light comes on with a single tone every time I start the car and the light stays on with "increased emissions" message. No loss of power though this time (if there is some it's slight when I quickly press on the gas pedal). When I know the code, I'll post it.

So I know I have to take it in, but wondering what your solution was?

I did indeed have it fixed after 7 different attempts by the dealer. Each time I brought the car in, the dealer found another vacuum leak, attributed to poor work when they put the car back together after the fuel pump went out. Finally, finally, the dealer opened a ticked with Mini corporate -- they sent someone out who found that the pipe to the turbo was not torqued correctly and was leaking air. Problem solved. I was ready to push the car off a cliff before it was finally fixed.

I keep getting a P1497 (I think?) and my mechanic says it is a leak somewhere between the turbo and the engine but he can't find it. I wonder if this is the same problem?

The nearest MINI dealer is 1.5 hours away, we bought the car used, so I go to a trusted mechanic. I'll show him this the next time I go and see if this fixes our problem.

Thanks for the update. I still have to take mine in to have it checked. I'll make sure to ask for the codes so they don't pull the wool over my eyes.

Got the car back. Service rep says mechanics found carbon deposits to be the problem. They used BG and they used Sea Foam. Supposed to clean out the entire engine. Then they kept it over night and started it this morning to see results. I'll have to post the comments on the service invoice. Something about decreased voltage readings and then increase once the engine was clean. Service rep says to use 89 octane since we are on the east coast. There is a possibility I'll need this treatment again, but he says up to now, the MINIs that have had this done have not come back for a second treatment.

I was surprised that with all the hype about BG products on the show room floor, that they still needed Sea Foam to help remove the carbon deposits. He says Sea Foam alone doesn't always do the trick. I have read that some on NAM swear by it. Mind you, I don't track my MINI, just 1hr avg commute morning and evening and I like to use the sport button.

We are getting the mystery chime as well...thought it was speed warning, but checked and it isn't plus it happens at different speeds, but happens every time it is driven.

Only started this AFTER JCW upgrade and dealer had to re enter shift codes due to a weird transmission shift.

It is at dealer now to try and diagnose chime...no warnings on either dash.

benny, i had that code, the P1497 it was a very slightly cracked valve cover, the dealer couldnt find it after looking for five hours. He said his best man was on it and they gave up. I said I think the valve cover is cracked??

So I bought a valve cover and changed it myself, it took 20 minutes and fixed the problem.

I think the dealer just lied about it. Either that or they are very dumb??

I told him ahead of time when I pulled in it seems like a cracked valve cover?

Thanks for posting. I diagnosed a club member's '07 MCS, and we knew where the leak was right away. Small amount of oil on his valve cover. He's gonna repair it himself.

I know this is an old thread, but I too have this "mystery chime" on my 09 Clubman S. Ive been having the chime for several months, have reported it to the dealer several times and they can not figure it out. It is not an angry chime, there are no alerts or notifications on any of the displays, and it is not the same as the seatbelt chime or the speed alert indicator.

Just today, I started getting the "increased emissions" alert

I am scheduled to go to the dealer on Monday - this thread does not give me alot of hope :(

MINI Orlando has now had my car for the past 6 days - I originally took it in because an increased emissions light was on. They have replaced the entire timing chain assembly, walnut shell blasted to clean out the carbon, and updated the software.

The only thing they have not been able to figure out in 6 days is the "mystery chime" that goes "duh duh duh". I appreciate their thoroughness but am amazed that no one knows that this chime is
