Hmm Very interesting...

Were you still able to see cross/hatch marks on the cylinder walls from the factory hone job?

I hope everything works out for you. A new engine is what should be done. Aynthing less & BMW/MINI is doing the hone job on you.

Glad they found the problem. That sort of error happens to everything that is assembled by humans. When I worked on Volvos they had a campaign to remove the pistons and re-orient the piston rings so all the gaps weren't lined up.That was also during the soft camshaft/hard lifter problem that resulted in round camlobes. It seems they were grinding the cams after they were hardened, but the hardening wasn't as deep as they had to grind.I remember Toyotas having rods that liked to escape the confines of the block on Corollas,Valves burning on some engines due to a lack of water jacketing around the exhaust seats. Head gaskets on v6s.Hondas with puking transmissions off and on since the 80s.Brake rotors warping on everything that has brakes. Alas, nothing no matter how much it costs or how high the percieved quality is perfect.

That's why good manufacturers have multiple layers of QA...

This is really inexcusable.

they have replaces the timing chain once and when every i got the tractor sounds i'd add more oil and it would quiet down --- i found out later that the first install was done incorrectly and it had to be done again

now sometimes when i hit the gas in 4th I'll get a small cloud behind me -- hmm

i'm still concerned that some damage was done -- i'm at 37K miles

there have been a few threads on this along the way

not sure what to make of it
Whoa, they gave you a line of BS. 750 miles to burn up a quart of oil? No way Jose. The car shouldn't burn any oil at all and they know that. That's basically lying and they should fix your busted car under warranty too. Be nice but be prepared to lawyer up if they turn you down.
