FYI Frozen Gas Cap warning

Just a warning

Last week I was leaving work on a snowy day. I needed gas (I put 13.17gal in )
I found my gas cap was frozen shut. I have the S so it's that stupid fake cap cover. After freezing my fingers off trying to open it I went inside and bought gloves and a spray bottle of deicer. I let the deicer soak and after a little while it opened. No harm done ( I hope).

The pin that keeps it locked shut was frozen and I kept hitting the button trying to unlock it. In hindsight I could have easily burnt out the little solenoid (or motor) or broken the cap and done some expensive damage to my car...

The moral. Get some deicer and be patient. I was at the gas station at least 20min. Trying to force it is a great way to brake something.

Isn't there an emergency release for just this sort of problem? Located inside the cubby in the boot, on the driver's side?

Be careful pulling the emergency gas door release in the boot. I pulled mine and pulled it apart. Had to remove the whole mechanism and in the process pulled the cable too hard and pulled the cable out of the little hole in the filler door area. This caused me to have to remove the fender liner and the gas pipe from the filler area to the tank, and the cone behind the filler cover door, a real pain to get it all back together, just be gentle when and if you pull that little white handle.
