Noise when depress clutch
Noise when depress clutch
Hi, i have a noise when i depress/release the clutch after shifting.
The shifting is fine, no noise at all but when i release the clutch (does not matter if smooth or hard) there is a metalic noise like "clunk". My dealer is not able to fix this problem and i gonna crazy of it.....so is this a normal by MINI or have anybody fix this issue...??
Please help me to get back the Mini-feeling and of course the fun...........
Rgds

My return spring also snapped today. I just called for the part, about $4. I don't have time to sit in line at the dealer repair shop for a few days so I ordered the part and will put it in next week.
I wonder if this is common around 20,000 miles because that is were I am at.

I also have a clicking sound when depressing the clutch. I havent noticed any problem associated with the noise yet. I plan on mentioning it at my next service visit.

Ralph, are you hearing a metallic "clunk" when releasing the clutch in 1st? If so I believe that's normal. Try searching "clutch clunk" in these forums - you won't get a direct answer but reading a few random posts it seems that the Getrag can be noisy and this sound is nothing to worry about.
I hear this on occasion. It is intermittent, though, I can never tell when it will happen.

I had complained about a noise my clutch was making when engaging and disengaging. They had told me that there was a clutch assembly replacement that Mini had sent out for a fix? Not a recall though from what i understand.
Hope that helps. I can call the service department on Monday and get the full explanation for you if you like.

Set your seat way back and get into the foot well by the clutch and brake with a flash light. Follow the arm of the clutch and there will be a spring (about 1" to 1.5") on the front side of the arm practically behind the dash down there. I'm surprised how flimsy it is for a clutch going in and out. I would say fatigue on the metal set in at 20K miles.

Also, you have your manufacturers mixed up. The tranny is Getrag, while the clutch components and flywheels are made by LuK Gruppe GmbH.
Getrags are generally pretty dependable, but there have been recent BQ issues since Getrag USA's relationship with Chrysler went sour and resulted in bankruptcy.

Now, LuK clutches are a different story, with their spotty-at-best reliability records. You either get a good one or a crappy one, like flipping a coin.
OP my guess is the throwout bearing? They are plastic, and not very durable to begin with.

Mine seems to do this as well, however i don't think it's my clutch. When I accelerate in 1st then take my foot off the gas pedal there is an audible clunk, it's the same in 2nd as well, this happens before I put my foot on the clutch pedal.
It only seems to happen after I've actually stopped then moved off!!

I had my head under the bonnet today and notice at the back of the engine bay behind the airbox, there is a pipe that bends up (coming from the left hand side as you look at it) into a slot at the bulkhead. This pipe has a rectangular end with foam. Now, it had come loose from it's location and seemed to be rattling about, so I plugged it back in and now the clunking sound seems to have stopped. I think that when the engine is under load, the engine ahd been moving and hence the pipe had been moving about creating the noise.
I hope this helps!
ps does anyone know what this pipe is?
Cheers

A couple of possibilities come to mind.
A club member recently had a similar clunk that turned out to be a loose front axle nut. It, in fact, came off and left the car motionless. Fortunately not broken but inert.
I was getting a major clunk when shifting into 2nd and found it to be the exhaust hangers were coming out of the bushings allowing the pipe to hit the floorpan.

...back from dealer.....
it seems to be fixed.......the dealer changed:
- motor mounting sockets
- shock absorbers (both side) including the spring plates etc...
- shift box (but only the mechanic for shifting)
- driving axles
the reason for the noise is in general a to big tolerance of this parts. This tolerance occured a "movement" from the shock absorvers and the driving axles and making this noise.....
I hope the noise is gone.......in only drove now 2 days........i will report....
