2010 MCS Poor Seat Build

Check out the seats they put in my new Cooper S. I know these are hard financial times but no new BMW purchaser would accept the fit of these!! If I purchased a pair of pants that fit like these...... sloppy workmanship.

i just hope what I can't see (engine and brakes) assembled better.

So what is the dealer/MINI going to do about this problem?

The sales manager won't return my calls or email. BWM have said they will do something but they say it is a "service" issue. I would say it is a "quality control issue" myself.
I have to have a Mini rep look at it. I figure they should come to my office though....
I'll keep you posted....

Man, that's bogus in my book. Maybe acceptable on a Yugo, but not in a premium car like a MINI.

It's pretty obvious they have cut corners compared to my 04. The gear stick feels cheap and the boot is thin and cheap looking. They have only run the padding on the rear of the front seats down 8" The vinyl below that sits 1/4" off the back of the seat. Problem is when kids sit back there their knees bump the vinyl and after 5 days there is already a line where the padding ends. I think you can see it in one of the pictures.
Looking up under the rear of the car there looks to be very little sprayed deadening - it just looks like they missed a process. There is a flimsy looking heat shield and thats it. I wonder how long that will take to fall off.
I love the engine though and the handling is pretty good. I bet they saved $200 and for what....I would have paid $200 more.

So if this was a known issue...why in God's Name did you take delivery and accept the vehicle as is??!!

Once you've taken delivery, they have your $$...and it's "See you LATER Charlie!!" Did you even inspect the car prior to picking it up?? Make notes on your Paperwork...ANYTHING that says the Dealer is going to fix this??!!

GregoryK, have you tried contacting your MA, or is he being a snake also? If I were you, I would try a different dealer. Either way it should be covered under warranty.

I never would have accepted delivery of a vehicle with such sloppy workmanship. Best of luck getting a resolution that is satisfactory to you.

Went to another Dealership and showed their Service Manager. We looked at all the 2010's they had (2) (really a BMW Dealership) and they were all bad. Not as bad as mine though. They had a few 09's and they were all better but only just accepable.
Will see what BMW consider a solution.

wait... are these the standard leatherette seats? If so, how come the back of the seat is also leather? Mine is plastic. Did they change this for '10?

No the back is leatherette. But it also was on the 09's we looked at. The 04 I had, had a plastic backing so you couldn't get that problem.
Interestingly the front really aren't that bad (they are double stitched so the seam is flat). The back seat tops don't line up either. When you look thru the showroom most are pretty bad.

Is that the standard seat on an MC? The Sport seats on my 2007 MCS (all MCS get sport seats) have plastic backs.

Same here with an 08, hard plastic backs... Those seats in the picture look really strange...

Mine's an '08 Cooper with standard leatherette seats, and it has leatherette backs. I think the "line where the padding ends" is by design though--if they put support beneath the leatherette down the rest of the seatback, there's less space for passengers' knees. My dad's A4 has hard plastic seatbacks which are quite unpleasant for one's knees. The open back is more pleasant for rear passengers to rub their knees against. The workmanship appears to be better than yours, though. Everything fits well. Sorry for the ugly flash pictures... it's dark out already. I'd definitely pursue this with the dealership or BMW NA. PM me for the full res pictures if you want to show your MA.

But yeah, those look awful. I would never accept a new car with seats looking like that. Not in a Kia and certainly not in a $35,000 car. The stitching looks shoddy and it almost looks as if someone took off the leatherette upholstery, and then did a really bad job of putting it back on. MINI do seem to be cutting corners. The loaner I had didn't have mechanical seat memory (in my '08, when I flip the seat forward, when putting it back it returns to its previous position).

Yup, standard seats. Don't know the exact build date, but was purchased end of September, 2008, off the dealer lot.

OP's seats seem like sport seats with a leatherette back--I always thought sport seats had hard plastic backs--now I'm confused.

JRKimbell thats what I would have expected. My wife drive a 2009 A4 Audi. The back edge has double stiching (so the seam lays flat) - looks perfect. That car is not much more expensive and you get leather/electric seats/sirius radio etc on the base model.....kinda wish that Audi made the Cooper!!!

Yep, I have the Sport Seats, sorry for the confusion, I guess I just didn't realize the difference.

That car never should've left the VDC. they're ultimately responsible for fixing and repairing factory (and transport) frackups.
