i'm petrified: 03 mini cooper cvt whine

My girlfriend bought a mini cooper cvt in january 09 with only 45k miles, has been a good car so far aside from the tach display stopped working and the strut bearings got all dried out and rattle, but its a 6 year old car so what ever. but recently there has a been a whining noise, its always been there since she bought the car, but has become extremely loud lately, like louder than the sc of a mini s. and from what i am reading, general this means the transmission is ****, could a fluid/ filter change be the solution? or is there maybe hopefully a recall this is covered under? thanks for any help or advice

also, the whine follows engine speed, does not change when i turn the steering wheel. would a fluid and filter change help, i don't know if the car has had one yet since we've only had it for 5k miles

If you have a MINI dealer nearby get it in and checked out. Maybe you will get lucky and it will be a power steering pump.
There is no way to diagnose over the internet but here's wishing you the best.
