How to program key fob

Hi, I need to learn how to program my key fob. It seems like some kind of mystery. The owners manual of my new old 2006 MINI S Convertible tells me all the terrific things that I can program -- but not HOW to make the magic happen. I have searched the web from top to bottom -- it is as if they saw me coming -- not one word anywhere. HELP -- Please

With the 2nd Gen MINIs you have to have the engine running before you can program the seperate Fobs...have you tried this??

Thanks -- but I do not have a clue of what steps to physically do to program anything. Is there a manual that goes step by step? Perhaps a pamphlet? What do I do once the engine is on? Thyanks again. Once again -- HELP!!!!!

You posted this in the second Gen forums where cars must be 2007+ coop, 2008+ clubman and 2009+ convertible.

From what you stated above you own a 2006 coop. Asking this question in the first gen forums would be a better place to get a real answer.

But from what i understand on the first gen cars the remote can only be programed by the dealer. there are no user programmable options as there are on the 2nd gen cars.

'05 and '06 R52 cabrios are 1st generation. '07 model year starts the 2nd generation. Mini is commonly used to refer to the classic pre-BMW models whereas MINI is associated with the BMW family. Keeping track of all the variations of the classic Minis can keep you busy and off the streets if you want to delve into that geneology.

You have a 2006 Cabrio, right? If so you really do have a first gen car. Rather than argue the point, I have a question - What are you trying to get the car to do? Maybe someone can help you out that way.

For the purposes of this board (and most others I'm familair with)

Classic = "original Mini"; the 1959 to 2000 varients

GEN1 = the first body style MINI; the ones with a supercharger in the S varient. 2002 thru 2006 for the hardtop and until 2009 for the rag top. And as stated the many programmable options on the GEN1 can only be programmed via the service computer the dealer has. I've never heard of anyone cloning this. When I had my 02 the dealer set the options as I asked on delivery and then offered 1 re-programming at no cost once I was more familiar with the car and subsequent reprogrammings would cost - $45 as I recall.

GEN2 = body style #2 MINI, the ones with a turbo in the S flavor; all Clubbies, and as of this year's ragtops. Here the many user programmable options can be programmed by the owner and most settings are stored in the FOB allowing each FOB to be driver specific. All described in the owner's manual - which is also available online if needed.

or you can also break down all MINI by the R codes...which have no meaning in the {pre-2002} Mini world

Try this. It might work, it did on my 05. If not call 1-866-ask-MINI
1. Close all doors
2. Switch to first on position (first click in the ignition), switch back off and
remove the key.
3. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the unlock button and at the same
time, press and release the lock button (3) times. (Must be completed
within 10 seconds.)
4. Release both buttons, The doors will lock/unlock to signal a successful
initialization.
5. If additional keys need to be initiialized, repeat steps 3-4 within 30
seconds
6. Switching the ignition to 1st position (first click) completes the
initialization.

Fugitive,
A little read if you're interested.

^^^

this is the correct way to program the key fob. also keep in mind that if you have more than one key, you need to program them all at the same time.

I have a 2008 MINI S, is there a way to program the key fob? I've looked in several places and the only information I can find is for older (up to 2006) models. This one doesn't have a key, just a start/stop button.

My 3 Button Key FOB for my 05' R50 is unable to wind down the windows when I held the "unlock" button... is there any specific program I have to do to enable this function?
I'm from Singapore by the way.

Car & Key Memory Programming

For those MINI hardtops 2006 and earlier and MINI convertibles 2008 and earlier the Car & Key Memory must be programmed by the dealer. Options like daytime running lights, automatically locking as you drive, unlocking doors - both unlock at same time or 1 click for drivers, another click for passenger door, pathway lighting, and daytime running lights.

If you have a newer model than above click on www.aboutyourMINI.com for instructions for progamming.

Dealer option....must be setup this way.
range is also too short imo to be really useful on a hot day....
so it sounds like a great thing, but you must stand very close to the car...hold the button till they finish....
you could have been sitting in the car if you did it while walking towards the car....

Yup, I agree on your point. But I'm just grumpy that my dealer did not configure the most out of the capabilities of the MINI.
