There is a condensate drain tube from the evaporator under the car, it is probably partially plugged up with mildew, dirt, etc and staying in your houseing and causing the smell. Try backflushing it gently with water and a little bleach. then flush it several times with fresh water. Either that or there is a dead critter in one of your cooling ducts.

Also at 49k the cabin filter(located under and to the rear of the glovebox) should be completely clogged up. Easy to do just unsnap two clips and pull it out.

+1 on the cabin filter. I had to replace the cab filter in my GTI about every 40k miles or it would really start to stink when switching on the a/c.

My AC smells like stinky socks for the first few minutes. ICK! I will complain next time it goes in for service.

I've had the same problem ever since I took the car in for its first service. This is perplexing to me because they said they changed the cabin filter and then the car started stinking when the AC is turned on. Oddly, it never did this before the service! I'll check this out and see if it's dirty, then call and complain.

Had the same issue start about 15k miles (stinky sock odor for first few minutes of A/C operation each time it was turned on). It went away after the replacement of the filter at the first service (19K miles).

Ac stinky

Hi- So, where is that drain which needs to be flushed, and how do you go about doing that? Today I ran my car in the garage for 15 minutes, at max AC, and no drips. Steve, 2007 r56 Cooper

I had the same problem. When the AC is turned on, it smells like cow dung/ stinky socks. At first I refused to believe it was the MICROFILTER. When I finally listened to my friend, and replaced the filter. The smell was GONE!

Just change the filter and you'll be fine.

The Dealer noticed an A/C smell at Molly's last Check-Up, I had already asked them to replace the MicroCarbon Filter anyway, I thought I'd be picking up the Tab, but they replaced it Gratis!!

Stinky AC

Thanks, folks, but I replaced the filter, no help. In the filter there were 4 dead baby mice, plus a shriveled Mom. I thought that would be the end of the problem, but no. This coming Friday, I'll take the problem to my mechanic. Steve

Don't mean to bring up a two month old thread but where is this drain for the evaporator? I've searched over my car and can't seem to find it! I'm waiting for the new filter to come in if its that but I rather have all my bases covered!

I had smells coming from the A/C and after several trips to the dealership, I still had 'em. The thing that helped, and this is after also replacing the filter under the glove box and making sure there is no blockage with respect to the condensate release, is to make sure to run the A/C with fresh air coming in on the last mile or so of every trip with your MINI during which you run your A/C. In order to get the coldest air coming through your MINI's A/C system, recirculation is the best. You are continually cooling your air with no outside air coming in. But, if you don't introduce outside air, you essentially are running a closed air system, and this will set up a mold and/or stale air condition. So, when you are heading to your destination or back home, hit the recirc button so you come off of that mode. That should help!

The drain is located under the HVAC box and is #4 in the pic, its drain out near the under tunnel of your MINI right near the exhaust heat protection shroud, towards the body. If you have water dripping from there after you run the air conditioner for a while , most likely its not clogged, but good to check.

Also when you replace the filter there might be dirt and debris in there make sure to get all the junk out around the filter sides. Those filters can get really dirty.

Most people have not changed there Cabin filter and its very dirty.

Goes right in there on the passenger side foot well and has a lid to close the box up.

#2 is the filter.

Most people go with the active carbon filters is it absorbs the smell.

Here is the regular Cabin Filter:

Here is the Active carbon one:
