Key fob working intermittently

I was under the impression that the battery in my key fob recharges when it's in the dash and the car is underway. (I have an 07 MC without the convenience package, so mine does not have a replaceable battery)

The car has close to 30k miles on it, and I've only ever used the one key (after seeing how badly the silver trim gets scratched up, I wanted to keep one key looking nicely in case I ever sell the car.)

In the last few days, I have had several instances where I've walked up to the car pressing away at the unlock button and nothing happens, no matter how close I get - eventually, I've had to take out the metal key and unlock the car that way.

Is something wrong with my key? or is this a normal age thing and I should consider getting a new one or switching to the other fob?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Dustin

I think the user manual says to use both keys, so that the batteries will stay charged. I don't know if the second one will even hold a charge if you haven't used it for 2-3 years. The dealer should be able to tell if the battery in the first fob is no longer rechargeable.
