I know these are supposed to be self aligning for height but they are off left to right noticibly. Anyone have experience with this?

When you say they are off left to right, do you mean the light pattern is higher to the right than the left? If so, that's they way they are suppose to be, atleast for North American applications. This is the beam cut off pattern that directs the light more to the right so that you won't "blind" oncoming traffic. All cars do this, it is just more noticable on the MINI. In Europe, this pattern would go to the left, etc.

If you look directly at the headlight (with the lights off of course), you will see that the lens will have a different reflector pattern on the left of the lens compared to the right of the lens. This directs the light pattern.

When you look at the headlights near to a wall you should see this beam pattern coming out of both lights _/

Once you are a good distance from the wall, the two _/ _/ (both of those should be at the same height) should blend into one beam pattern that looks like _/

It is also a bit of a misnomer that the headlights automatically adjust for height. They automatically adjust to the height they have been set to, but you still can control what that nominal height setting is by using the up/down adjustment screw on the back of the headlight.

Hope that helps.

Like Dave said, there are screw adjustments under the bonnet for each headlight. you can adjust them for height (up, down) and side to side (left, right). i've adjusted mine higher but not too high that they blind anyone.
That's probably the first "mod" I did to my MINI!

and the headlight height adjustment screw is very sensitive. 1/8 of a turn moves your light pattern quite a bit, so don't turn too much.
