Welcome to the concept of an internal combustion engine. Be glad it's not a prius that silent as it comes around a corner and runs you over while you're crossing the street because you never heard it coming!

I was just about to reply "No. Engines are completely silent. Ignore the whole gasoline combustion thing, that shouldn't make any noise whatsoever."

It definitely should not make the noise that MINI owners have been complaining about. I have experienced that deathly racket myself on a few occasions. Yuck!

Why is my 09 MCS with 2200 miles not making this noise, despite sitting for 4 days and nights falling well below freezing, and below zero a couple nights? What am I doing right here?

Good question. I keep my 09 MCS in the garage and it only has 4,200 miles on the odometer; it has made the noise on a few occasions. And I do not think we are doing anything different when we push the button in the morning.

Not all MINIs are created equal. Some owners out there have more problems than others, ranging from sunroof to hoodscoop issues (and many, many more).

Again, I have only experienced the noise a few times. Don't worry, you still have time.

One question: have you ever started yr car, only to shut it off after a minute or two, say to move it from one spot to another, w/o letting it warm up?

No, I haven't. The issue has always happens immediately after I push the magical button and the MINI starts.

The only noise Molly makes when it's cold is "brrrrrrr", but then I start her up and she's ok.

Do you poke sticks into wasp's nests just for fun as well?

Yes, my 08S sounds like a deisel on several occasions. I try not to rev it up to the point where I hear it, and after a few minutes it goes away. A few weeks ago I did an oil change and started it up to check for leaks, etc. The next morning I thought I was driving a Mack truck. I pulled over and shut down the engine and waited 30 seconds, the noise continued until I arrived at my destination just a few blocks away. Five minutes later I started it and the noise was gone. Makes me feel unsettled, like oil isn't getting to where it needs to be..... I know there is a thread here that discusses the problem..

Actually, there are several...but these two are probably the most comprehensive:

A full read-through will give you good insight into the idiosyncrasies of the death rattle.
