Changed oil - small amount of oil below car in morning

I changed my oil last night. Used a Napa Gold filter. It went smoothly and the canister was easy to put back on. I oiled the o-ring so it would slide smoothly. Started the car, checked for leaks around the housing and it was fine. Drove it a bit. Checked for more leaks and it was fine.

This morning there was a small amount of oil from under the canister. I checked it. Backed it off just a little and re-tightened it. Oil level is fine so I drove to work.

Any ideas how its leaking out of the canister? It threaded on just fine. Can I back the canister back out and double check the o-ring? Or will oil leak everywhere?

Thanks,
k

When you loosened the canister (the first time) did you let it drain before removing it from the car ?

Yes, I let the canister sit and drain. I did not spill any oil from the canister during the oil change. The oil on the ground the next monring was clean oil.

Can I remove the canister without draining the oil to check the o-ring? If that does not solve it I will get a mini oil filter and use that instead of the Napa. Lots of people said the Napa works great but it was a little different looking.

I bought an Mini OEM filter and put it on. The O-ring from that filter is much more substantial and thicker than the o-ring from the Napa filter. That should have solved my issue.

My friend had the same problem with an after market oil filter, the O ring was undersized. Replaced with OEM MINI filter problem solved.

I had the same problem with an STP filter, and also noticed the o-ring was much smaller thickness wise and as soon as I put in an OEM filter no more leaking.
