Oil filter?
the longevity between change intervals, shear rating..... I would not use a non spec'd oil for any extended oil change intervals quoted by the OEM.
Royal purple FTW.
Plus its made right here in Texas. I swear by it, I have seen the internals of a car that used it its whole life and WOW. My Moms Mustang GT has over 200k on the clock, my Dad did a complete teardown and there was no wear, there was still crosshatch marks on the cylinder sleeves.

Just changed mine for the first time (R53), and I'd throw in this:
Consider getting a fumoto valve--I bought one, and I can't wait to do the next oil change. Should make it a breeze.
OEM filter isn't necessarily the best one out there. After reading about filters, I went with the Wix 7303....
Break the seal on the oil filter housing soon after you take the drain plug out; if you let is sit until there is no more oil draining from the drain hole, I you won't spill one drop of oil (read this as a tip here on NAM). I took my time, but I can't believe how "clean" the change was following the tips here..
Make sure if you don't install the fumoto that you have at the very least a spare drain plug. The MINI dealer did my last oil change, and the drain plug was WAY overtorqued--it wouldn't budge. Not only that, the bolt was almost completely stripped; I couldn't get a wrench or socket to hold on it. I had the fumoto, so no big deal, but what I had to do to get that bolt off was almost criminal (suffice it to say no type of wrench was involved, and the drain plug is now in the circular file)...
