Fan Diode Recall
Must have missed this. When I brought my MCS to the dealer today to have the glove box latch repaired I found the car on a lift with a tech working under it.
They said they were performing the "Perform/Recall/Campaign"; "Installed Fan Diode as per campaign.
Diode, adapter cable, cable strap, nut were replaced. Then they gave the car a "bath" and detailed the exterior.
They said the latch was fixed, but they ordered a new one, and offered to pick up my car and leave a loaner when it comes in.
MINI of The Hamptons is a great dealer.

I did not notice, and it was a pretty hot day Wednesday. I will check Friday.
Wonder why we never heard of the recall on this board?
Most modern gauges are "weighted" to center so customers are not alarmed at small changes. Nice to know MINI put a real gauge in!

Red

WOW you are lucky. Brecht mini not only had didn't have a loaner car they also wanted me to pay 30$ a day for an enterprise one. I got some serious attitude from the service guy, I guess he prefers working with people that buy bangles 70K$ 7-series. What build date is the recall for. I just took my car in two days ago and they didn't even tell me about it. I guess I am going to have to make the 33 miles trek again.
I have a 04/2003 build my temp has always read in the middle (50%) it gets their
pretty fast, but never moves once it reaches the halfway point, takes a while to
cool off. I have not heard any recall from my dealer, going to call and try and see
what's going on. thanks for the post.

MINI didn't put a real gauge in. The MINI gauge is weighted to center for normal temperatures just like everybody else's gauges. The gauge will stay at the center mark as long as the coolant is within a range of normal temperatures. If the coolant temp goes above or below that range, then the gauge will move.
As paranoid as some MINI owners are, can you imagine the traffic in these forums if they had installed true-reading gauges?
"My temp gauge reads at .25" above the center line on 100 degree days!!!!! Is this normal?"
"No, take it in, it's only 75 degrees here today and mine is just below the center line. Your MINI must be broken."
It would be a nightmare

I had the diode and harness work done on my car about 7 weeks ago.
I was told by the dealer that this was a service campaign, and not a recall.
I was also told that the diode and harness was for teh cruise control.
????
Not that my cruise control changed, works as poorly as before.

Here's what's REALLY going on:

The temperature gauge went right to the middle at about sample #80 and
didn't move a twitch the whole time.
This is some highway driving, exiting, highway, local traffic and back home.
maybe 10 minutes or so.

Yea, its not a recall, just a service action. Apparently they only do it if your build date is as below and you are having some electrical related problems, like warning lights coming on for non-exsistant conditions.
Tech Service Action 610403:
SERVICE ACTION: DIODE RETROFIT HARNESS FOR ELECTRIC POWER
STEERING PUMP FAN. COOPER and COOPER S. 12-01-02 to 05-19-03
LOW VOLTAGE PARASITIC CURRENT. MAY CAUSE IMPLAUSIBLE BRAKE
LIGHT DIAGNOSIS & ERRONEOUS FAULTS.
RETROFIT DIODE ADAPTER HARNESS & CLEAR FAULT MEMORIES.

YEAH!!! My 02-??-02 MINI Cooper 5-speed is not included!!!
HEY??? I thought us "early-build" folks were suppoers to have MORE
problems than the later builds.

>>Uuummmp....Can someone respond to my question about where the temp gauge is?
Since you have the navigation system, the speedometer moves to the
steering wheel. With this option you lost the temperature guage, you
only have the fuel guage.
Its spelled out in your owners manual.

Silver,
It's on the bottom left of the big speedo in the centre of the dash, but as you have the sat nav with the neat little speedo by the rev counter, I suspect that you only have warning lights. Try the owners handbook. My handbook doesn't have the sat nav in it.

My dealer referred to it as an "open recall" and completed the diode repair when I got an oil change last Monday.
My temp gauge always reads in the middle and never varies. The cruise control is absolutely perfect. I wonder why some are great and others aren't. I am always amazed by such large variations in quality when it's the same assembly line that creates all of our cars.
1/4/03 manufacture date, MC.

So, Trippy...your graph indicates a fluxuation from about 168 to 198 degrees...and the temp guage stays the same? I always thought that the cooling system must really be great since mine has never gone above halfway - ever! This kinda scares me cause I want to know what's going on in the engine. If this is the case, why put in a guage at all??

Yeah! My MKIX Jaguar sedan had real gauges alright. I would sit in traffic watching the water coolant go up, and the oil pressure go down. No weighting and no mercy!
